5” x 7” embroidery hoop or larger

6 Sheets of Kunin “Friendly” Felt, this is the stiff felt available at Joann’s

Spray Adhesive

2.5oz stabilizer for 6 hoopings

45” of 3/8” Grosgrain ribbon

Sharp seam ripper

Purple Thang sewing tool

Optional: 6 ½” and 4” scissors (KAI recommended)

Final Product: What You Will Create

Step 1:

Cut two 5” x 7” rectangles of the stiff felt for each Gnome, tautly hoop the stabilizer.

Step 2:

Run the 1st color-stop (CS 1) in white as a placement line on the stabilizer. The placement line in the picture was stitched in black just to make it easier to see in the photo.

Step 3:

Spray adhesive on the wrong side of a 5” x 7” felt rectangle and position over the placement line so that the felt exceeds the placement line by at least 1/2” on all sides.

Step 4:

Follow the color chart to embroider the gnome – do not stitch the last two color-stops.

Step 5:

Remove the hoop from the machine – do not unhoop – place the hoop face down. Spray adhesive on the back of a second piece of felt and position it over the original placement lines.

Step 6:

Return the hoop to the machine. Run the next to last CS in Black to outline the gnome. Run the last CS in white to stitch the buttonholes for the ribbon.

Step 7:

Trim around the gnome 1/8” from the black stitching. If areas are two small to cut just leave them filled with the white felt. Be sure to keep your scissor blades parallel to the stitching. If start to angle them you are liable to snip the bobbin threads of the outline which will make that stitching ravel. I recommend the two sizes of scissors mentioned in the materials list.

Step 8:

Open the buttonholes with a sharp seam ripper.

Step 9:

Cut a 45” or desired length of ribbon. Use the flat edge of a Purple Thang® or similar tool to tuck the end of the ribbon from the top of a sugar skull to the back.

Step 10:

Cross the ribbon over the back of the skull and push through the ribbon to the front. Continue in this manner until all six gnomes are connected with the ribbon,

Step 11:

Arrange the spacing between your skulls to your liking. Command Strips have several products available for hanging your swag on the wall. Check out their products to find a method that suits you. Congratulations your ITH Sugar Skull Swag is complete.
