Description

It’s almost summer time which means it’s time to create some napkins for Memorial Day and 4th of July picnics. Make your own napkins or use purchased napkins to save time.

Preface:

Napkins are very simple to do and adding decorative stitching in addition to the embroidery connects the designs in a fashionable way. The alignment points for the designs were moved in software from the center of the designs to the lower left corner for the “Patriotic Corner” design and bottom middle for the “American Border. If you don't have software to do this, just print and use the center alignment point in the design for the project.

Step 1:

Gather the supplies needed. Use embroidery thread colors to coordinate with other picnic items you like to use. For this project, the colors were to coordinate with baskets.

Step 2:

Press the napkins with spray starch. It makes them easier to embroider and nicer to handle

Step 3:

Hoop a piece of tearaway stabilizer and spray it with the temporary spray adhesive. Align the corner of the napkin in the hoop. Load design “American Border”.

Step 4:

Align the design to the corner. For this project, the bottom of the design was aligned 2 ½” away from the corner of the top stitching of the napkin. Stitch the design following the color sequence.

Step 5:

Load the design “Patriotic Corner”. Hoop tearaway stabilizer and spray with temporary spray adhesive. Align the napkin in the hoop and place the paper pattern into position for alignment. Align the needle to the corner.

Step 6:

Sew the design following the color sequence. Remove the stabilizer and re-press the napkin.

Step 7:

Decide on two or three decorative stitches to sew around the napkin edges. Usually the machine manual will have pages showing the decorative stitches available on the machine.

Step 8:

Choose a decorative stitch and an embroidery thread color used in the design.

Step 9:

Randomly meander around the outer edges of the napkin.

Step 10:

Choose two or three additional decorative stitches and embroidery thread colors and repeat the process.

Step 11:

There are many good books to show wonderful methods for napkin folding. In addition, internet searches may be done.

Step 12:

Repeat the steps for the other three napkins; press. Fold the napkin as desired and set the picnic table.
