Ladybug Mug Rug Embroidery Project

I did not follow a specific pattern for this mug rug. I just embroidered the ladybug first, then cut an exact square around it. I estimated my desired finished size to be about 6" x 9", and just joined coordinating fabrics to the ladybug square until I achieved that size.

 

I then cut one piece of backing fabric and a piece of quilt batting the same size of 6" x 9". I machine-basted the black rick-rack to the front edges of the top piece so it would stay in place when I sewed all three layers together. With the top and backing pieces right sides together and the quilt batting behind them, I sewed 1/4" seam around the edge through all three layers, leaving a gap on one side where I could flip the whole thing inside out.

 

After trimming the corners and flipping the mug rug inside out, I then ironed it and top-stitched around the edges. To finish off, I quilted through all layers by using 'stitch in the ditch' technique along all seams.
