Jack-O-Lantern Treat Bucket Embroidery Project

Description

Get ready for a bucket full of fun, trick or treating this Halloween!

Materials
  • Ice cream bucket (5 quarts)
  • Fabric for pail: 38-1/2" wide x 9-1/2" long, 7-5/8" diameter circle
  • Fabric for handle: 20" wide x 2" long
  • 1 piece of 3/8" Elastic: 25-1/2" long
  • Thread to match pail and handle fabric
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric marker

    Step 1:

    Instructions for handle: 

    Fold the fabric in half width wise.


    Step 2:
    Sew ¼” seam, the width of the fabric.

    Step 3:
    Turn it right side out.

    Step 4:
    Remove the handle from the ice cream bucket and slide fabric over the handle of the ice cream bucket.

    Step 5:
    Then tuck both raw ends under approximately ¼” on both ends. Set aside until the bucket cover is finished.

    Step 6:
    Instructions for bucket cover:  

    Fold the large piece of fabric lengthwise.


    Step 7:
    Sew ¼” seam, the width of the fabric to create the back seam.

    Step 8:
    At the bottom of the fabric (using the long machine stitch) sew a row of stitches ¼” from the raw edge of the fabric. Sew a 2nd row of stitching between the ¼” row and the raw edge.

    Step 9:
    Divide circle piece into 4 equal sections likewise and mark each section with the fabric marker.

    Step 10:
    Divide the fabric into 4 equal sections likewise and mark each section with the fabric marker. (You can embroidery the design on the fabric now, opposite the back seam or you can wait until the cover is completely sewn together and then embroider the design.) 
     

    Step 11:
    With the right sides of the fabric together, pin the circle piece to the bottom of the larger piece of fabric at each quarter marking.

    Step 12:
    Gather the larger piece of fabric to fit each quarter section of the circle piece.

    Step 13:
    Stitch the two pieces of fabric together at the ¼” seam.

    Step 14:
    At the upper edge of the fabric make ¼” rolled hem.

    Step 15:
    Make a ¼” button hole 9” from the back seam on both sides of the seam and 1 ¼” from top finished edge.

    Step 16:
    Overlap the ends of the elastic 1”, then stitch together.

    Step 17:
    Fold elastic into quarters and mark each quarter section with a straight pin.

    Step 18:
    Pin the elastic on the inside with the upper edge of the elastic placed 1” below the hemmed edge. Stretch the elastic to fit and sew in place.

    Step 19:
    Then place the fabric cover over the bucket aligning the button holes with the holes for the handle.

    Step 20:
    Attach the handle at the button holes.
