There are plenty of applications for pillow embroidery. In some situations it’s as easy as taking a stock pillow with a zipper enclosure, removing the cushion and performing the embroidery. In other cases, there is no zipper and you will have to open a seam in order to embellish the covering. Then finally you have the situation where the pillow must be created from scratch. For one-shot deals, anything less than having a pillow with a zipper enclosure, is probably not worth the time or so it would seem. But look at the application. It’s not just about sewing. It’s about creating a unique, custom piece of decoration, so it may be possible to charge a hefty fee for all of the work. Don’t overlook it. So what if it takes a week, as long as you are being paid the appropriate amount of money for the job. But look past the one-shot deals. Is there a market for a line of custom pillows? Don’t be scared off by the aspect of ripping and re-sewing seams, or creating covers from scratch. Find a source to supply you with the pillow end of things, so that all you have to do is the embellishment. Then you can create a production process that makes the concept more manageable. Now you have something that no one else does, so you have a competitive edge and the ability to charge higher prices. Always remember that you are NOT selling embroidery. You are selling heirlooms, keepsakes, memories, image, décor, art, etc. When you embellish a plain white pillow with a unique design for the nursery, you are not creating an embroidered pillow, you are creating an heirloom that can be handed down for generations to come. It’s priceless! And that is what our business is really all about! |
