The Ring Bearer Pillow

Always a favorite addition to most weddings is the young boy carrying the wedding rings down the aisle, delicately balanced on a very special pillow. All too often, the Ring Bearer, distracted by all of the commotion, is prone to getting lost and/or dropping this very important pillow along with its precious cargo.

Because of this, Ring Bearer pillows are not ordinary cushions called into service for a couple of hours, then returned to a life of leisure. First of all, the pillow décor must match that of the wedding party. Second, the pillow needs to have a strap on the bottom that the Ring Bearer can place his hands through, palm up, ensuring that the pillow stays firmly attached to his little hands. Third, the rings must be firmly secured to the pillow.

To learn more about Ring Bearer pillows, I contacted Ann Cobb, who recently made one for her son’s wedding. Says Ann, “I made the pillow from scratch, as it’s not something you just pickup locally. I started with a pillow form that can be purchased from a fabric store. Then I made the covering for the pillow, using the same fabric, lace, and trim as the bridal gown. And of course, I then added the all-important strap for the little guy’s hands, not that it helped much once he started down the aisle. Initially, I was going to add a ribbon to the center of the pillow for securing the rings. But there was a concern that something could still happen, so plan B was to use a couple of duplicate rings, rather than the real ones. But then I decided, what the heck, why not just create the illusion of rings using embroidery. So in the end there weren’t any real rings on the pillow, just embroidery, which makes for a great keepsake.”

Ring Bearer pillows are truly a custom item that more often than not, need to be created from scratch. But much like everything else associated with a wedding, there is a premium price tag associated with this item, so it’s an area that should be studied for profit potential.

MARKETING TIP – Offer your custom Ring Bearer pillows through a bridal shop.
