The Pillowcase

Not a pillow in and of itself, but a necessary addition for the bed pillow, pillowcases open themselves up well for embroidery (pardon the pun). Since one end is already open, it makes for easy hooping and sewing.

What kind of embellishment goes on a pillowcase? Anything you wish. But let’s think about the use. If this is really going to be used in conjunction with a sleeping pillow, the embroidery itself could be irritating to the skin. Thus, the embellished area should be small and out of the way. It should be centered at the open end of the pillowcase, between the edge of the opening and the stitching on the hem. Typically the embroidery would be a 3 letter monogram 2”high x 3” wide or a single letter monogram no larger than 2”high x 2” wide.

If the pillowcase is going to be merely a decorative item, never to be touched by a human head, then the rules change. First of all the pillowcase now becomes a pillow sham. This opens up the entire (hoopable) surface for embellishment. Second, monograms are an option, but not the only one. Floral patterns, scrolls, even basic stock designs are acceptable. Depending upon the application, subtle colors should be used, including tone-on-tone. But there may be an occasion to use brighter colors depending upon the application. In any event, the embroidered design should tie in (blend in) with the room’s décor. Bottom line: pillowcases and shams offer lots of possibilities, without a lot of labor.
