Flags, Pennants and Banners
These items require special attention because they are two-sided, which means that the backside will be just as visible as the front. Of course, this results in a beautiful design on the front, and a not so great-looking one on the rear. There are basically two methods to address this situation: use panels or wind your own bobbin. The first is to use two panels for each item. You embroider the logo on each panel, then sew them together back-to-back. Be sure to pay close attention to the logo placement, especially when dealing with triangle shaped pennants. It is important that you designate one panel as the front and one as the back, to ensure correct orientation. While this method usually results in the best finished appearance, it tends to be cumbersome and costly. A second method to consider is winding your own bobbin, so that it matches the top thread. In fact, use the same cone of thread for both top and bottom threads, but be sure that it's polyester, since rayon doesn't work too well for bobbins. Now when you sew on a single panel, the top and bottom threads are the same so that you don't notice the bobbin side, except when viewing it up close. This is simple, quick, and cheap, but the downside is that the logo applications are limited. For example, letters will be normal on the front but reversed on the backside. One word of caution: be sure to experiment with winding and sewing your own bobbins before taking on a project. You may have to adjust tensions, top and bottom, to get a satisfactory sew-out. But once you are comfortable with the process, you can add yet another tool to your bag of embroidery tricks. |
