Sewing pieces of your garment together

There are two causes here. The first is improper hooping. The second is not paying attention when attaching the hooped garment to the machine. Classic examples include sleeves or shirt tales getting trapped under the hoop then sewn together. This most commonly occurs when using tubular frames.

NOTE: Stray sections of garments are the only things that get caught in hoops.

Get yourself in the habit of examining the bottom of the hooped garment before it goes onto the machine to ensure that only the desired portions of the garment are contained within the confines of the hoop. While placing the hooped item onto the machine, ensure that nothing gets trapped between the top of the sewing arm and the bottom of the hoop. As a final measure, slide your hands underneath the hooped garment and along the sewing arm to ensure that everything is free and clear. A few extra seconds of verification can save you from destroying an expensive item.
