Improper Hooping

New embroiderers definitely struggle with hooping and the subject can cover several pages of an article. Just the basics are presented here.

IMPROPER HOOPING – FABRIC IS NOT TAUT
  • Ensure that the backing is larger than the area of the hoop. It must be firmly grasped by the hoop all the way around. Don’t think that using smaller cuts of backing or scraps is a money-saving idea. Backing is cheap; replacing garments because of poor embroidery quality is not. The purpose of backing is to stabilize the fabric. If the backing is not hooped completely, the fabric will not be stabilized in every direction.
  • Choose the smallest hoop possible. A hoop that is too large will not support the fabric properly and lead to poor sewing quality. Of course, if the hoop is too small you’ll end up with goof #2.
  • The fabric must be taught, but not stretched. If it gets stretched, it will snap back to its normal position when un-hooped, resulting in poor quality. The one exception to this rule is lycra or similar material. If the material was designed to be worn in the stretched state, the sewing should take place with the fabric stretched.
  • Before placing the hooped garment on a machine, inspect it closely to ensure nothing extra is caught in the hoop, like another section of the garment or a stray work-order.
  • When hooping a jacket with an inner lining, make sure the hooped portion of the liner is smooth with no wrinkles.
