Sewing on waterproof garments may open some new doors for business
For embroiderers, sewing on waterproof garments may open some new doors for business. However, some specialty fabrics have a warranty that might be negated if embroidered. One of these is Gore-Tex. W.L. Gore and Associates is very peculiar about their product and will not honor the warranty if the fabric has been breached or altered in any manner.
Jenessa Craig of Corporate Image Outfitters, Whitefish, Montana elaborates. “Gore-Tex is a very specialized fabric that needs to be handled properly in order to insure that it maintains its unique waterproof characteristics after embroidery. We have developed special techniques for embroidering Gore-Tex and sealing it back up after production. Digitizing also requires special attention when dealing with this fabric. We are the only company certified to embroider on Gore-Tex. We maintain the original product warranty and guarantee our own work. No one else can do that. Because of our close relationship with manufacturers who create apparel using Gore-Tex, we can also source a wide variety of specialty garments for other embroiderers, as well as provide the certified services.
Based on this information, embroiderers should find out if other waterproof fabrics have warranties and/or specific guidelines for embroidery.
On another subject, how do you sew on umbrellas? Quite simple, actually. You must have a machine with a drop table and tubular capabilities. If you look on the inside of the umbrella when it’s opened, you will notice that the fabric is attached to the frames using small strings, which can usually be untied. Untie just enough to allow the area to be sewn to be hooped, then mount the entire unit on the machine.
So now that you know a little bit more about embroidery on waterproof items, go out and experiment so that you can become comfortable with the process. Once you are satisfied with the results, you won’t have to say “no” the next time someone brings in a rain suit or foul weather gear. Instead you can answer yes and put some more cash in your pocket. No more rainy day blues for you!
