When taking an order, you should be aware that most customers can’t really visualize things such as text size, so create sample sew-outs of different heights. If you are real enterprising, you can create sample height sew-outs for each of the ten standard fonts. This will provide the customer with a real-life visualization of font heights. Yes, you could show them the setup on the computer screen, but once you open that door, be prepared to spend a huge amount of time changing and modifying the design. Stay off the computer as much as possible when working with the retail customer.

NOTE: There are times when it is necessary to work with the customer to develop different layouts and combinations. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as the revenue generated is greater than the investment in time.

In addition, create standards for all of your everyday jobs. For example, Monogram heights for towels, linens, collars, cuffs, sheets, pillows, etc. Specific fonts for certain subjects, such as Kindergarten or Kidsprint for children’s items. Standard placements and sizes for different applications such as turtlenecks, sleeves, shorts, etc. All of these things will make the ordering process friendlier and quicker.

Retail Embroidery can be lucrative and fun to boot, but it can be very frustrating if you aren’t prepared to work with the customer the right way. Know your customer and know their needs. You are considered by them to be the expert, so don’t be afraid to lead them through the process. In the long run they will appreciate it, which will lead to a long-term relationship and a loyal customer. Whatever they want to buy, sell it to them and do it quick!
