Final Product: What You Will Create

    Step 1:
Read through the instructions thoroughly before beginning and assemble all the materials needed to complete the project.

    Step 2:
Use the smallest hoop size for the design.

    Step 3:
Press the fabrics well. Load the tree design on the machine.

    Step 4:
Hoop together one layer of fibrous water-soluble stabilizer and the green Kona cotton. Place the hoop on the machine.

    Step 5:
Stitch the first color which will baste the layers together. Continue stitching the tree motif.

    Step 6:
The third color will stitch the stem stitch outline. There is a stop for this color in case you want to make it a darker or lighter green. Remove the hoop from the machine, but keep the fabric in the hoop. Choose a corner of a napkin.

    Step 7:
Fold the napkin corner back on itself, right sides together. Measure up from the point about 1.5” from the tip and place a pin. Align the pin to the arrow on the hoop.

    Step 8:
Align the fold to the top mark on the hoop; make sure the napkin fold is straight and the fabric is smooth. Now run a light bead of glue stich around the outside of the tree area.

    Step 9:
Fold the fabric over and pat it into the glue. Now fold back the other side, place glue around the other side of the tree.

    Step 10:
Smooth the fabric down and press it into place. Before placing the hoop on the machine, use the scissors to snip just a very small hole about in the middle of the tree—just through the napkin.

    Step 11:
Place the hoop back on the machine and stitch the last color, changing the thread to black—or red—as you prefer. This color tacks everything together. Use the applique scissors to trim inside the area.

    Step 12:
Trim the napkin inside the tree area, leaving about ¼” remaining. Clip into the curved areas; this will help when fringing the area in the next step.

    Step 13:
Using a soft brush, gently brush the napkin edge that remains over the tree. Try not to brush the tree area—just the napkin edge so that no stitches are dislodged on the tree.

    Step 14:
Some of the frayed edges may be longer than others—just trim them down a bit.

    Step 15:
Turn the napkin over and trim away the excess stabilizer, then trim away the green fabric around the tree, leaving about ½”.

    Step 16:
Fold the napkin area back, and edge the green fabric with the fray check following the manufacturers’ directions. The napkin should look like this. Repeat all the steps for the remaining napkins.

    Step 17:
Aren’t these fun! They are different and will add a rustic flair to your winter tables. Be sure to check out the complimentary projects: Rustic Table Runner and Rustic Placemats.
