Description

Brighten up your morning routine with these charming Llama Mug Rugs. Each quilted block features playful llama and cactus designs, crafted entirely in the hoop with added binding at your sewing machine. Perfect for adding a touch of fun to your coffee or tea break. Materials
  • 6” x 10” or larger embroidery hoop
  • For each mug rug:
  • 2 10” x 8” of White Kona Cloth®
  • 1 10” x 8” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting
  • 1 yard of Fiesta Serape Stripe Orange – see note in the preface
  • 2.5-ounce Cut-away stabilizer to fit your hoop
  • Water Soluble Thread
  • Spray adhesive

    Final Product: What You Will Create
    Preface:
    Only one 2 ¼” x 36” strip of quilting cotton to bind each of these mug rugs. If the stripes run lengthwise on your fabric you only need ½ yard to complete all six mug rugs. The Fiesta Serape Stripe Orange used in the samples has horizonal stripes. Therefore, the 2 ¼” strips needed to be cut lengthwise to have the multiple colors as shown in the samples and you will need one yard to cut appropriate length strips. The Fiesta Serape Stripe Orange fabric was purchased from Fabrics.com.

    Tautly hoop the cut-away stabilizer and cut your front and back materials as well as Battilizer® into 10” x 8” rectangles.

    Run the first color stop (CS) in a neutral thread as a placement line for your fabrics.

    Spray adhesive on the back side of your front fabric and position over the placement lines so that the fabric exceeds the placement lines by ½” on all sides. Run CS 2 in white to tack down the fabric.

    Follow the color chart through the next to last color stop to embroider the llama and lettering. Do not run the last two color stops yet.

    Remove the hoop from the machine. Do Not unhoop. Lie the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray adhesive on one side of the Battilizer® and position it over the back of the hoop aligning it with the front fabric. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the back fabric and position it right side up over the Battilizer®.

    Return the hoop to the machine and run the next color stop in water-soluble thread to tack down the back fabrics. Run the final CS in white to quilt the block.

    Lay the ¼” mark of a see-through ruler along the water-soluble tack down stitches and trim all edges of the mug rug to 1/4”.

    Read the note in the preface regarding the amount of fabric required depending upon the way the stripes run on your fabric. If using the Fiesta Serape Stripe Orange fabric cut 2 ¼” x 36” strips lengthwise for the binding.
