ITH Succulent Coasters Embroidery Project

Description

Stitch up these wonderful ITH Succulent Coasters as a thoughtful gift for your cacti loving friends. They are completely made in the hoop in 30 minutes or less.

Materials
  • 5” x 7” embroidery hoop or larger
  • 2 6” squares of Light Grey Gunge quilting cotton
  • 1 6” square of Battilizer® or low loft batting
  • 2 layers of Fibrous water-soluble stabilizer to fit your hoop
  • Black embroidery thread for the top and bobbin of your embroidery machine
  • Spray Adhesive

    Final Product: What You Will Create


    Step 1:

    Gather the fabrics as listed in the materials list. Tautly hoop 2 the two layers of fibrous water-soluble stabilizer in your embroidery hoop. Note: Obviously, you can embroider these on any color fabric of your choice, but the multi-colored grunge fabrics add some interesting shading to the succulents.

    All color-stops (CS) in this project will be run with black thread in the top and bobbin. The different stops are part of the design file just to make the machine stop for you to preform different tasks. Run CS 1 as a placement line for the fabrics.

    Spray adhesive on the Battilizer® and position it over the placement lines so that the Battilizer® exceeds the placement lines by at least ½” on all sides. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of a fabric square and align it over the Battilizer®. Run CS 2 to tack down the fabric and Battilizer®.

    Remove the hoop from the machine. Trim the fabric and the Battilizer® right up next to the tack down stitches. Do be careful to not clip the tack down stitches.

    With CS 3 stitch the succulent.


    Step 6:
    Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Place the hoop down on a flat surface backside up. Trim the thread tails from the top of the design.

    Spray adhesive on the back of the remaining fabric square and position over the back of the embroidery so that the fabric exceeds the circle outline by at least ½” on all sides.

    Return the hoop to the machine and run CS 4 to tack down the back fabric.

    Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Trim the back fabric right up next to the tack down stitches.
     


    Step 10:

    Return the hoop to the machine and run CS 5 to stitch the border on the coaster.


    Step 11:
    Remove the project from the hoop and trim the stabilizer from around the coaster being sure not to clip any of the satin stitch border.

    Run hot water at the kitchen sink. Use a sponge or cloth to rub around the edges of the coaster to melt away the stabilizer. Lay on a clean smooth cotton dishtowel to dry. If some stabilizer still appears white after the coaster is dry repeat this step.


    Step 13:
    Congratulations your ITH Succulent Coasters are complete!
