Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Barn quilts originated back in 2001 and today has become a popular outdoor wall décor as well as indoors. This tutorial will take you step by step to create a Rustic Mini Barn Quilt using your cutting machine to cut/create the symmetry SVG design ( Patriotic Quilt Square) stencil and paint the open weeded areas of your stencil to create this ornate yet simple piece of art.

.*Basic knowledge of a cutting machine, editing an SVG design and how to prepare vinyl for stencil is required.

**The paints selected were of three colors. White to paint the board background along with two coordinating gray colors. Follow my
selection of colors or choose your colors to coordinate with your home décor.

Step 1:

Gather all supplies and review instructions before beginning.

Step 2:

Paint your framed board the background color of your choice. Wanting to create a “rustic” appeal I painted my board with an unfinished look by wiping the board with a cloth while the paint was still wet. Allow time for paint to dry completely.

Step 3:

Bring the Vector/SVG design (Patriotic Quilt Square) into your cutting machine program .Cut/resize design to approx 10” x 10” per your cutting machine's instructions.

Step 4:

Prepare your vinyl for cutting. Cut vinyl. Weed your cut vinyl for a stencil .

Step 5:

Apply transfer tape per manufacturers’ instructions atop weeded stencil. Remove back adhesive from stencil. Center and apply to dried board frame. Fingertip press to secure. Remove transfer tape. Smooth out any bubbles around edges of weeded areas to help avoid paint seepage underneath.

Step 6:

Painting
Paint your open weeded areas. Two colors are used in this tutorial. Let paint dry completely for one color before moving on to the next.

Step 7:

Carefully and slowly remove stencil after paint has completely dried. Any vinyl fragments left on the board remove by lifting using your weeding tool. Spray a coat of clear matte glaze over your painted board to protect and “seal”. Allow to dry. Great job! Your Rustic Mini Barn Quilt is now complete!
