ITH Ghost Softies Embroidery Project

Description

Create adorable ITH Ghost Softies that are perfect for Halloween decor or playful fun. These charming little ghosts are beginner-friendly and make a great project for all ages. Step-by-step instructions are included.

Materials
  • For each Ghost:
  • 5” x 7” embroidery hoop
  • 2 8” x 7” rectangles of White Fleece Fabric
  • 5” x 3” rectangle of water soluble embroidery topping such as Solvy®
  • 7” or more of 1/8” White Grosgrain Ribbon
  • Tear away stabilizer to fit your hoop
  • Embroidery Tape
  • Cellophane Tape
  • Poly-fill

    Final Product: What You Will Create

    Step 1:
    Cut 2 rectangles of fleece” long and 7” wide. Make sure that the cross grain of the fabric goes across the width of the rectangles. That is the direction that has more stretch.

    Step 2:
    Tautly hoop tear away stabilizer in your embroidery hoop. Run the 1st color stop (CS) 1 with white thread as a placement line.

    Step 3:
    Lay a fleece rectangle of fabric over the placement lines. Do NOT STRETCH the fabric, but make sure the cross-grain, the greater stretch of the fabric, goes across the ghost’s body. Tape the fleece into place with embroidery tape. Run CS 2 in white to tack down the fleece.

    Step 4:
    Right after you stitch the tack down stitches your machine will move to a new position where it will start sewing the first eye. Lay a piece of water-soluble topping underneath your presser foot and about 1” closer to the top of the hoop than the foot is. This will put the water-soluble topping in the correct position for the face to stitch over it.

    Step 5:
    Follow the color chart to stitch the face. Some faces will have just a pink and black color stop, some have a pink, black and white color stops depending on if there is a white highlight in the eye. Remove the water-soluble stabilizer and tape when the face is completed. Do not run the last color stop yet.

    Step 6:
    Fold the 7” of grosgrain ribbon in half and tape it about ½” over the top of the head. The tape does not have to be exactly over the center of the head as varying its placement will enable the ghosts to hang at different angles.

    Step 7:
    Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Lay the 2nd 8” x 7” rectangle of fleece face down over the original placement lines. Tape the fleece down on all sides.

    Step 8:
    Run the last CS as the final seam.

    Step 9:
    Remove the ghost from the hoop. Remove the tear away stabilizer from outside and inside of the ghost.

    Step 10:
    Cut around the seam stitches with a ¼” seam allowance. Leave a ½” seam allowance in the opening area where there are no final seam stitches. Clip the curves and down into the notches where the hands extend from the body.

    Step 11:
    Turn the ghost right side out using a chop stick or other implement to poke out the hands and the scalloped edges at the bottom.

    Step 12:
    Stuff the ghost with small bits of Poly-fill® to your desired firmness. Turn in the seam allowances using the original placement stitches of the front seam as a guide.

    Step 13:
    Hand stitch the opening closed.

    Step 14:
    Congratulations your first ghost is complete! Stitch up the other 9 following the above steps to create a Fright of Ghosts.
