Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Farm Fresh Eggs for Sale! This egg themed denim grocery tote makes it easier to be green. Lightweight, durable, and washable. Handy for a quick grocery trip or stroll through your local farmer's market. A single needle embroidery machine was used to make this project. Basic sewing skills are needed to finish the bag.

Step 1:

Read the directions before beginning. Gather the materials needed for the project. Embrilliance Essentials embroidery software program was used to print the design template.

Step 2:

POCKET:
Pin right sides together of the 11"x12" piece of neutral fabric (pocket front) & the 12"x14” piece (trim & pocket lining). Sew a ¼” seam.

Step 3:

Flip the 12”x14” fabric piece over leaving a 1.5” strip of trim fabric on the neutral fabric. Press the fabric at the fold line.

Step 4:

Cut one piece of SF101 Pellon shape flex interfacing approximately 12"x12".

Open the pocket fabric into one long piece. Lay it on a flat surface with the wrong side of the fabric facing you. Place the fusible side of the SF101 on the half that has trim on it. Follow package directions to fuse the interfacing to the fabric.

Step 5:

Placement: Leave 3/4" at the bottom of the bag for the border. Find the center point on the fabric.

Step 6:

A design template is the actual size of the stitched design. It is a great placement tool. Center the design template on the fabric.

Step 7:

Floating Hoop Method: Hoop one piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer. Mark the center point on the stabilizer. Match the center points on the stabilizer and design template. Lightly mist the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Adhesive spray. Gently press the fabric onto the stabilizer. Surface should be smooth and wrinkle free. Secure the fabric with pins.

Step 8:

Attach the hoop to the machine. Load the embroidery design. Use a 80/12 embroidery needle. Stitch the design.

Step 9:

Trim excess stabilizer from around the design leaving about 1/2" margin. Trim long threads if needed.

Step 10:

Straps: Cut two pieces of accent/trim fabric 4"x24".

Step 11:

Cut two strips 1.5"x24" of double sided fusible foam.

Step 12:

Iron an 1/2" lip on all sides of the accent fabric. Place the fusible foam inside the accent strips. Fold the sides of the accent fabric over the fusible foam. Pin the fabric in place. Press with an iron to fuse the fabric to the foam.

Topstitch rows about 1/4" apart on the accent fabric.

Step 13:

Place one 12"x15" piece of denim right side up. Take one of the straps and pin both ends 1" from each top corner. The ends of the straps need to extend 1/2" over the fabric edge.

Step 14:

Place one 12"x15" fabric lining right side down over the denim. Pin the denim and lining fabric together at the top. The strap handle must be between the denim and lining fabric. (Fabric is moved aside so that you can see the handle.)

Step 15:

Sew a 1/4" seam. Notice how the strap extends about 1/2" past the fabric edge.

Step 16:

Turn the fabric right side out. Press along the seam line with an iron.

Step 17:

Topstitch two rows along the top edge.

Step 18:

Repeat steps 13-17 for the other side of the bag.

Step 19:

Place the pocket on the front of a denim side. Square the sides of the bag and pocket if needed. Pin the bag together. Sew a 1/4" seam on three sides of the bag leaving the top open.

Step 20:

Cut one piece of accent fabric 3"x width of fabric. Fold the strip in half and press on the fold with an iron. Open the strip and fold the outer edges to the center line. Press with an iron. Fold again.

Step 21:

Pin the binding around the edges of the tote.

Step 22:

Topstitch two rows on the binding.

Step 23:

Congrats! You have completed a Denim Tote Bag.
