Description

Appliqued and quilted in the hoop, these cheery snow people mini quilts will brighten all the little spaces in your home this winter. Hang them together or spread them out throughout your home.

6” x 10” embroidery hoop or larger

For each mini quilt:

1 8” x 11” rectangle of snow printed quilting cotton

1 8” x 11” rectangle of white Kona® cloth or quilting cotton

1 8” x 11” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting

2.5 ounce stable cut away stabilizer to fit your hoop

Applique for SNPL01: 1 8 ½” x 6” white on white print quilting cotton and Heat N Bond Lite®

1 3” x 5” red Kona® cloth and Heat N Bond Lite®

Applique for SNPL02: 1 6” x 5” white of white print quilting cotton and Heat N Bond Lite®

1 3” x 3” blue quilting cotton and Heat N Bond Lite®

Applique for SNPL03: 1 8” x 5” white on white print quilting cotton and Heat N Bon Lite®

1 2 ¼” strip of quilting cotton for binding cut the width of the fabric

1 6 3/8” x 3” rectangles of quilting fabric for quilt hanging sleeves

Spray Adhesive

Magic Sizing® or spray starch

Final Product: What You Will Create

Step 1:

Tautly hoop the 2.5 ounce cut away stabilizer in your hoop. Assemble the fabrics and batting per the materials list above. Spray and iron each applique piece three or four times with Magic Sizing®, this helps prevent fraying, and press the Heat N Bond Lite to the back of the applique fabrics.

Step 2:

Run color stop (CS) 1 in white as a placement line for the fabric.

Step 3:

Spray adhesive on the back of the snow print fabric and position over the placement lines so that the fabric exceeds the placement line by ½” on all edges. Run CS 2 in water soluble thread to tack down the fabric. Water soluble thread is used so that if your binding doesn’t cover the tack down stitches you can remove them by rubbing them with a damp cloth. If you never have a problem with covering your tack down stitches with the binding you can use white thread for this step.

Step 4:

Run CS 3 in white thread as a placement line for the body.

Step 5:

Remove the paper from the Heat N Bond Lite® applique piece, spray the back of the applique piece with adhesive and position over the placement lines. Tack down with CS 4.

Step 6:

Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, and trim the applique right up next to the tack down stitches and iron down with an applique iron. Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to add the hat applique.

Step 7:

Follow the color charts to complete the snow people until you get to the last two CSs. SNPL01 and SNPL02 will have a second placement line and tack down stitches for their hats. Stitch those placement lines and tack downs in colors to match your hat fabrics. Apply the applique in the same manner as you applied the body applique.

Step 8:

Before you sew the last two CSs, remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, and lie the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray adhesive on the batting and align over the original placement lines so that the batting exceeds the placement lines by ½”on all edges. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the back fabric, if you are using a print, and align the back fabric with the batting. Return the hoop to the machine. Run the next to last CS in water soluble thread to tack all the fabrics together. Run the final CS in Super White to quilt the block.

Step 9:

Remove the project from the hoop. Aligning the ¼” mark of a see through ruler along the final tack down stitches and trim all edges to a ¼” seam allowance.

Step 10:

Bind using your preferred method or see our article on Binding Small Embroidery Projects.

Step 11:

Attach a hanging sleeve ½” from the top edge of the mini quilt. If you do not know how to make a hanging sleeve please see our article Attaching a Hanging Sleeve to a Mini Quilt. A strip of fabric 6 3/8” wide and 3” in width was used for the hanging sleeves on these mini quilts.

Step 12:

Pull on the ends of the quilt frame to release the wooden dowel and insert the dowel through the hanging sleeve. Reinsert the wire frame into the dowel end.

Step 13:

Congratulations your Snow People Mini Quilt is complete! Make all three!
