Description

A Split Gingerbread Kitchen towel will add a touch of festivity to your kitchen at Christmas. The project combines machine embroidery with some basic sewing.

One kitchen towel

One 9"x13" piece quilted fabric

One fat quarter of 100% quilter's cotton for trim

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

A split gingerbread kitchen towel will add a personal and festive touch for the holiday season. Project does include some simple sewing.

Step 1:

Personalize the design template using an embroidery software program. (Embrilliance Essentials was used to personalize the example.) Print a design template.

Step 2:

Gather and prepare the materials for the project. Read the directions carefully before beginning the project.

Step 3:

Cut one piece of quilted fabric 9"x13".

Step 4:

Cut one strip of complimentary quilter's cotton 2" x width of fabric.

Step 5:

Fold the fabric strip in half and press on the fold.

Step 6:

Open the strip and press the edges on each side to the center fold line.

Step 7:

Pin the trim around the edges of the 9"x13" piece of quilted fabric. Use the sewing machine to stitch a seam along the edge.

Step 8:

Fold the towel in half. Cut the towel along the fold.

Step 9:

Fold the quilted fabric in half. Use the design template as a placement guide on the quilted fabric. Pin the template to the quilted fabric.

Step 10:

Hoop two pieces of medium weight (2.5) cutaway stabilizer. Mark the center and axis points on the stabilizer.

Step 11:

Center the design on the stabilizer. Secure the fabric by using a light mist of temporary adhesive stray on the stabilizer. Add pins for added stability.

Step 12:

Load the embroidery design onto the machine. Check your needle size. Attach the hoop to the machine. Use the color chart as a guide to embroider the design.

Step 13:

Once the design has completed stitching, remove the hoop from the machine. Trim excess stabilizer from the back of the design leaving a 1/4" margin. Clip any long threads if needed.

Step 14:

Cut a 2" x width of fabric for trim on the towel. Cut the trim the width of the towel adding two more inches for the sides.

Fold the edges of the fabric down 1/2" and press.

Step 15:

Cut one piece of Heat n Bond Ultrahold to match the size of the trim.

Step 16:

Follow the package directions to bond the Heat n Bond to the trim.

Step 17:

Remove the paper backing from the trim. Place the trim about 1.5" from the bottom edge of the towel. Follow package directions to complete the bonding of the trim to the towel.

Step 18:

Turn the towel to the back. Fold the edge of the trim down and bond it to the towel.

Step 19:

Use a needle and thread and hand sew a running stitch along the top edge of the towel. Make sure to secure the end of the thread before beginning.

Gently pull the thread and slide the towel together until it is the width of the topper (approx. 9").

Step 20:

Cut a piece of fabric 11" x 1.5". Pin the gathered towel to the fabric. Sew a seam along the top edge using a 1/4" seam allowance. (Fabric may be slightly wider than the towel.)

Step 21:

Fold the cotton fabric in half and press on the fold. Fold the sides of the fabric to match the width of the topper. Fold the fabric in half again and pin it to the topper.

Sew the topper to the towel.

Step 22:

Topstitch the trim on the bottom of the towel.

Step 23:

Add snaps to the sides of the topper.

Step 24:

Measure 1" from the side and bottom corner. Mark the spot with an air erasable marker.

Step 25:

Punch a hole in both layers of the topper on both sides.

Step 26:

Add the snaps.

Step 27:

Great job! You have completed a 'Split Gingerbread Kitchen towel'.
