Description

These felt Christmas cookie ornaments are so easy to stitch up. They are made in the hoop then stuffed. The small opening is closed by hand. This is a great way to create ornaments that the smallest children can safely hang on the tree.

Materials

4” x 4” embroidery hoop

½ yard of 60” wide quality felt

No Show Stabilizer for 6 hoopings

1/8” White Satin or Grosgrain ribbon

Chop stick or other blunt tool to assist in stuffing

Polyester Fiber Fill

White sewing thread and a hand needle

Embroidery Tape

Spray Adhesive

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

These designs should all fit in a 4” x 4” embroidery hoop. My latest machine did not come with a hoop that size so the sample photos are shown stitched in a 5” x 7” hoop.

Step 1:

For each ornament cut 1 layer of no show stabilizer for your embroidery hoop; 2 6” squares of the felt and 8” of ribbon.

Step 2:

Run color stop (CS) 1 in white as a placement line.

Step 3:

Lay a square of felt over the placement lines, run CS 2 to tack down the felt. If you spray adhesive on the back of the felt before placing it the registration of the outside stitching lines will be enhanced.

Step 4:

Follow the color chart through the next to last CS to stitch the details on the ornament.

Step 5:

Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Fold the ribbon into a loop. Place the loop in the center of the embroidery, extending the two raw ends of the ribbon about 1” inside the ornament and tape them down.

Step 6:

Place the second layer of felt on the back of the hoop aligning it with the felt on the hoop front. Taping it in place is optional. Do not use spray adhesive on the back of this felt.

Step 7:

Return the hoop to the machine and run the last CS as a seam that will leave a small opening for stuffing.

Step 8:

Trim around the ornament about ¼” from the seam stitches. You can trim through all layers except at the top of the ornament where you need to be sure you do not cut through the ribbon. Trim the top felt and stabilizer while holding the ribbon down with your fingers. Then hold the ribbon to the front of the ornament and trim the back felt. You can then continue to trim through all layers.

Step 9:

Stuff as desired with small bits of poly fill. You can use a chop stick to get stuffing into the smaller parts of the ornaments. As the tree ornament has many small parts it has a smaller opening, use chop sticks or other blunt instruments to stuff that one.

Step 10:

Pin the opening closed. Backstitch on top of the exposed placement line with white sewing thread to close.

Step 11:

If you accidentally cut off your ribbon while trimming the ornament do not despair, simply fold under the edges of the ribbon and stitch the ends to the back of the ornament.

Step 12:

Congratulations your first ITH Christmas Cookie Ornament is complete!
