DIY Yarn and Ribbon Accessory Embroidery Project

Description

Create a stylish accessory using leftover yarns and ribbons with this easy and fun project. Perfect for crafting unique scarves or belts, this project helps you make the most of your crafting supplies. Step-by-step instructions are included.

Materials
  • Floriani Wet N Gone Fusible – This product is a fibrous water soluble stabilizer that has a fusible coating on one side. It will rinse clean making it a perfect choice for this project.
  • Floriani Water Soluble Topping – Creates an even stitching field after the ribbons and threads are fused into place.
  • Teflon Pressing Sheet – Will allow you to fuse without the stabilizer sticking to the surface of the iron.
  • Teflon Pressing Foot – When stitching the ribbons in place, this foot will glide over the Water Soluble Topping.
  • Decorative Thread for the bobbin and top – I prefer to use two different colors for a “twist look”.
  • Pieces of Yarns, Ribbons, Threads, Netting, Fabric, etc. – Anything goes! There are several companies that have 2 or 3 yard cuts of multiple, coordinating yarns and ribbons pre-packaged on a card. One scarf can usually be created from one package.

    Step 1:

    Cut the Wet N Gone Fusible one inch larger than the desired length and width of the scarf/belt and lay it on a flat work surface with the fusible side facing up.

    Step 2:
    Arrange the ribbons and threads to your satisfaction on the fusible side of the Wet N Gone Fusible. If a ribbon border around the scarf/belt is desired place it on the stabilizer as well.

    Place your Teflon pressing sheet over the top of the yarns and press them into place the length of the scarf/belt. Remember to use a low-temperature setting on your iron.

    After the yarns are fused into place, cut a piece of Water Soluble Topping the length of the scarf/belt and pin it into place on top of the yarns.

    Stitch a ½” grid, large stipple stitch or machine decorative stitch (not satin) over the entire surface of the scarf/belt to connect the yarns and threads.

    Step 6:
    After the stitching is complete, submerge the scarf/belt for several minutes and then rinse under running water. This process may be repeated to obtain maximum softness. Lay the scarf/belt out on a towel and let it dry.

    Finish the ends by attaching ribbons and beads.
