Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

A rolled 'Watermelon Placemat' with a pocket for utensils. The fabric list will make one placemat.

Step 1:

Text was added to the design using an embroidery software program (Embrilliance Essentials). Add text to the design if you prefer.

Print a design template.

Step 2:

Gather the materials needed for the placemat. Iron and starch the fabric. Read the directions before you begin the project.

Step 3:

Using the 6"x10" piece of fabric, make an 1" line with a friXion pen on the wrong side of the fabric. Fold the raw edge 1/2" toward the 1" line. Press on the fold.

Fold again to the 1" line. Press the fabric and pin in place.

Step 4:

Fold the raw edges on the short sides over 1/2". Press with an iron. Fold over 1/2" again. Press with an iron and pin in place.

Step 5:

Stitch a 1/4" seam along the folded long side. Refer to the picture for guidance.

Step 6:

Place the front fabric piece right side up on a flat surface. Place the pocket 2" from the edge in the lower left corner. Pin in place.

Step 7:

Divide the pocket into 3 equal sections. Use a fabric pen to mark each section.

Step 8:

Stitch a seam along the lines. Use the picture as a reference.

Step 9:

Put one piece of No-show Mesh stabilizer in the hoop. Use the design template to guide placement on the placemat.

Float the fabric onto the stabilizer. Use a light mist of temporary adhesive spray to secure the fabric onto the stabilizer. Make sure to align the center and axis points.

Load the design. Stitch the design. Parts of the design are appliqued. After stitching is finished, trim the No-Show stabilizer to about 1/2" from the stitching.

Step 10:

Fold the 2" x 40" piece of fabric in half. Press along the fold line. Fold each raw edge toward the fold line. Press along the folds. Pin in place.

Stitch a 1/4" seam along the edge of the tie.

Step 11:

Make a 'sandwich' when putting the placemat together. Lay the batting on a flat surface. Next put the 'back' fabric piece on the batting with right side facing you. Last, put the 'front' fabric piece with the right side down. Make sure the pieces are smooth and wrinkle free. Trim around the edges if needed. Pin the pieces together leaving about a 3" opening on the left short side for turning.

Stitch a 1/4" seam around the edges of the placemat.

Step 12:

Turn the placemat right sides out. Press along the seam line.

Fold the tie in half. Place the folded end of the tie into the opening you left on the placemat. Pin in place.

Top stitch around the edges of the placemat.

Step 13:

You have finished the placemat. :)
