Sew Easy Placemats Embroidery Project

Fold each fabric in half lengthwise.

Cut 2 sections 13” times the width of fabric (WOF).  Repeat this step.  Then cut again to make four 13” x 19” pieces for each fabric.

Mark a dot lightly using an erasable marking pen 2 ½” from each side of the corners of the 13" x 19" fabric pieces.  Each corner will have 2 dots along the outer sides.

 

Place a ruler on a diagonal, connecting the 2 dots in a corner.  Trim off triangle. Repeat for each corner.

Sew around the perimeter (outer edge) of the fabric, leaving an approximate 3 inch gap for turning the project right sides out.  Reinforce stitches when you start and stop sewing.  Turn project right sides out, making sure to keep corners crisp.  Press.

 

Topstitch ¼” from edge of placemat, around the perimeter again reinforcing when you start and stop.  (Topstitching is stitching that appears on the right side of an item, usually along a seam or edge.)

Create template for 8 x 11 hoop.  Using an embroidery software program, select the 8" x 11" frame.

Place the Feathered Leaves embroidery design 5 ½" x 5 1/8" on one half of the grid. Copy and paste the Feathered Leaves design. Place on the other half of the grid.
Align the embroidery design on the center of the frame.

 

A floating technique will be used for this project.  Only stabilizer is put in the hoop.  The item (placemat) is placed on top of the stabilizer.  A temporary adhesive spray is used to hold the item securely in place. 

 

Hoop the tear away stabilizer in the embroidery hoop frame.

Mark the midpoint on the stabilizer for each side of the frame.

Mark the center point on the stabilizer. 

Put a stick pin in the center point of the placemat.  Fold the placemat in half. 

 

Align the stick pin with the center point on the stabilizer.  Align with the guide marks on the stabilizer.  Spray stabilizer with the Temporary Spray Adhesive. 

 

Unfold the placemat and gently press onto the stabilizer.  Repeat this step for the other side of the placemat.
