Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Of course, these FSL Doily designs could be stitched with a solid color thread but, if you’ve never used variegated thread, this is the perfect project to stitch for the first time using that thread. Depending on the embroidery design, variegated thread will come out striped or in no pattern at all as it did with these FSL Doily designs. These designs are the perfect coaster size—and what Grandmother doesn’t love doilies that remind her of yesteryear.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. If using variegated thread, you will find there are a lot of colors present—it will be a total surprise as to how it stitches out in the design which is half the fun of using this type of thread!

    Step 2:
If you have software you can gang up two or more designs in a hoop depending on the hoop size. Be sure to allow plenty of room between designs.

    Step 3:
Load the design on the machine. If you have ganged several designs up in a hoop, make sure to do a trace so that you are sure the foot of the machine won’t hit the hoop. Place the thread on the machine and stitch. It really is a lot of fun to watch variegated thread stitch out. The colors pattern is never the same from design to design. Using variegated thread is a great way to add a lot of interest to a design without any additional work.

    Step 4:
After all the designs have finished stitching, remove them from the hoop and generally cut them apart.

    Step 5:
Soak the designs in the water temperature designated by the stabilizer manufacturer. Let the designs soak only until the stabilizer disappears from the holes; most of the stabilizer should remain in the design so that the coasters are stiff after they are dry. Remove the pieces from the water and lay on paper towels. Pat out the excess water with another paper towel. Lay the coasters on a flat surface to dry—preferably overnight.

    Step 6:
Congratulations on creating some very pretty and useful Doilies! Grandmother can use them underneath her Wedgwood pieces in a cabinet,

or as part of tea service when entertaining. She’ll be proud to show off these beautiful little doily coasters to her friends and brag about how her family member made them for her!
