Pie Box (the one used for the project was purchased online from Hobby Lobby “Share the Pie Wood Box with Lid SKU: 5802236)

12” x 12 square of rust colored wool

12” x 12” square of cotton batting

Embroidery thread as stated in color sequence

Poly mesh stabilizer

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Roll of jute with pearl or other trim

Roll of brown ¼” satin ribbon

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Begin with a wooden pie box, embroider a scrap of wool fabric, apply trim and you’ve got a decorative box to deliver a special pie to a holiday dinner.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Because stores like Hobby Lobby change their products frequently, you can also search the Internet and websites like Etsy by putting “pie box” in the search engine.

Step 2:

This particular pie box has a lid with a printed side and the other side is blank. You can choose to cover the printing or use the blanks side as was done for the project. Just note, the printed side on this particular box has a small cutout at the bottom of the lid for opening and closing the lid. When the blank side is used, a little ribbon pull handle has to be added in order to open and close the lid when it is on the box.

Step 3:

Trace the lid on a pie of rust-colored wool (the wool is cut to size after embroidery). Quarter fold the wool piece to find the center; mark the center.

Step 4:

Hoop the wool centering the mark in the hoop. Load the embroidery design on the machine and stitch following the color sequence. After the design has finished stitching, move the needle back to the center position and lower it into the fabric. Use a pin to mark the center position of the design—this will be used to help square up and cut the fabric to size.

Step 5:

Determine how large you would like the fabric to be on the top of the box—remember, the lid must be able to slide into the box so do not get the edge of the fabric too close to the edge. For the project, the fabric was cut approximately 1 ¼” to the inside of the lid when it was on the box. Measure and mark the fabric. Baste along the marked line through the stabilizer and fabric. Cut away the excess fabric close to the basting stitch.

Step 6:

Cut a piece of batting slightly smaller than the wool. Place the lid on the box and center the fabric on the top of the box using a gridded ruler to help aid in centering the fabric. Heat up the glue gun. Apply glue to the lid and smooth the batting in place and also to the edge of the fabric. Glue the top and sides, leaving the bottom un-glued.

Step 7:

Cut a length of ribbon (6” cut for project), fold it in half and insert it under the bottom edge of the fabric at the center. This ribbon will be used as a pull to open the lid from the box.

Step 8:

Using the roll of jute with pearl trim, fold under the end of the trim about ½” and glue in place. Trim the corners of the fabric. Glue the trim around the fabric, folding under and meeting the ends at the center of the ribbon pull. Create a bow using the remaining ¼” brown ribbon and glue in place over the trim ends at the bottom center of the lid

Step 9:
