Description

Choose from any of the 10 Cool Selfie Mug Mat designs or make them all as cute gifts for your friends and family that are always posting selfies on social media. Embroidered and quilted in the hoop, bind the mug mat on your sewing machine.

Materials

For each mug mat you will need:

2 9” x 7” rectangles of 100% cotton pastel fabric

9” x 7” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting

2.5” x 42” strip of fabric for binding

Stable 2.5” cut away stabilizer

5” x 7” embroidery hoop

Magic Sizing or spray starch

Spray Adhesive

Embroidery threads per the color charts

Water Soluble Thread

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

The fabric chosen to bind these mug mats is called Enchantment by Clothworks® designed by Laurel Burch Y1971-3. This fabric is covered with inspirational words that seem to embody the spirit of the fun people that take selfies. Though you can use any number of fabrics to bind these mug mats this fabric was particularly appropriate. Clothworks.com has a search feature to help you find a retailer that carry their fabrics if you choose to look for this one. Due to the number of stitches in each of these designs choose a stable 2.5 ounce stabilizer to maintain registration in the embroidery. Print out the color charts for each design and proceed as follows:

Step 1:

Tautly hoop the cut away stabilizer; run color stop (CS 1) in a neutral thread as a placement line for your fabrics. I normally used white thread for this CS but used Bronze thread in this photo so you could see it.

Step 2:

Press wrinkles from your fabric with Magic Sizing® or spray starch then spray with adhesive. Position your fabric over the placement line so that the fabric exceeds the placement line by ½” on all sides. Run CS 2 in water soluble thread to tack down the fabric.

Step 3:

Follow the color chart to complete the embroidered selfie stopping before the last two CS are listed.

Step 4:

Remove the hoop from the machine; do not unhoop; turn the hoop over; spray adhesive on the Battilizer® and position over the placement line on the back of the hoop.

Step 5:

Spray adhesive on the back fabric rectangle and place over the Battilizer®.

Step 6:

Return the hoop to the machine; run the next CS in water soluble thread to tack down the back fabric and Battilizer®.

Step 7:

Run the final CS in white or any color thread that you would like to quilt the mug mat.

Step 8:

Lay the ½” marks of a see through ruler along the water soluble thread stitching and trim all edges of the mug mat with a ½” seam allowance.

Step 9:

Your mug will now look like this. At this point we usually say bind as desired. But, if you don’t have a favorite method for binding these small projects we have now posted a new article “Binding Small Embroidery Projects” if you would like to see the simple way I use to apply the binding.

Step 10:

Congratulations your Cool Selfie Mug Mat is complete!
