Two pieces of white cotton fabric large enough to hoop

Pink mini pom-pom trim

Embroidery thread as stated in design and to coordinate with pom-pom trim

Poly mesh stabilizer

Small amount of polyester fiber fill to fill pillow

White sewing thread to stitch the pillow together

Embroidery software (optional) for adding text to design

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Stitch up a cute little pom-pom trimmed mini-pillow for someone you love. Use embroidery software (or machine fonts) to add the additional text.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Be sure to include a thread to coordinate with the pom-pom trim.

Step 2:

Add text to the design in embroidery software (this can also be done at the machine if your machine has the capability). For the project, the “Upright Script” font was used in .4” size on two lines, centered justification. The heart on the right side of the owl was also copied and duplicated at the end of the phrase “owl always luv you”. Save the file and name it and then save it in the format needed for the machine.

Step 3:

Cut the white cotton fabric larger than needed to fit the hoop. Starch and press the fabric and then quarter fold it and press in the creases to find the center. Hoop the fabric with the poly mesh stabilizer. Load the design on the machine, rotating it if necessary. Stitch the design following the color sequence.

Step 4:

After the design has stitched, do not cut away the excess stabilizer - it is kept in the project. Now decide what size you’d like the pillow to be. The lines drawn will be the guide for stitching on the pom-pom trim. I started out larger and then continued drawing until it was a mini-pillow size, in a slight rectangle shape. I used a cap from a spray can to round the corners making it easier to stitch on the trim.

Step 5:

Beginning at the bottom, trim the pin in place. Remove a few pom-poms leaving just the edging at the beginning and end as shown.

Step 6:

Stitch the trim in place. Stitch close to the edge near the pom-poms. This stitching line will also be used as a guide when stitching on the backing. Press the remaining piece of white cotton fabric. Place the embroidered piece on top of the back piece.

Step 7:

Pin the two pieces of fabric together—be sure the pom-poms are to the inside of the pillow. Stitch the two pieces of fabric together around all sides using the first stitching line as a guide. Leave an opening at the bottom for turning. Trim the excess fabric using the trim edge as a guide. Turn the mini-pillow through the opening left open at the bottom.

Step 8:

Form the seams and corners well. Use a small amount of fiberfil to softly stuff the pillow through the opening; hand stitch the opening closed. Optional idea: include a little potpourri or dried lavender if you’d like to make this a scented mini-pillow.

Step 9:

Congratulations on completing the cute little “Owl Always Luv You” mini-pillow.
