Preface:

Start with a felt stocking, cut it apart, embroidery and stitch the cuff - or otherwise decorate with trim - and you’ll have a nice little stocking for kitty’s Christmas.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Decorating the cuff is optional but may be done with variegated embroidery thread (shown in instructions), colorful rick-rack, or other trims.

Step 2:

Either remove the stitches or just cut along the sewing line to take the stocking apart. Cut out the paper template of the design and decide which side of the stocking to embroider.

Step 3:

Fold the stocking in half lengthwise to find the center and center the template on the fold line. Determine the depth of the cuff so you’ll know where the top of the embroidery design should be. Use the smallest hoop possible for stitching.

Step 4:

Hoop two layers of tearaway stabilizer and spray lightly with basting spray. Quarter-fold the stocking at the center and center the paper template in the hoop and press the stocking fabric onto the hooped and sprayed stabilizer. Load the design on the machine and center the needle over the center of the design template.

Step 5:

Embroider the design following the color sequence. After the design has finished stitching, remove the fabric from the hoop and carefully remove the excess stabilizer.

Step 6:

Decide how to decorate the cuff either with colorful rick-rack, variegated thread, or other trims. For the project decorative machine stitches were used with variegated thread on the cuff. Pin a strip of tearaway stabilizer behind the cuff. Choose the decorative stitches and stitch the cuff; use the presser foot to space the rows of stitching evenly.

Step 7:

After the rows have been stitched, remove the outer edges of the stabilizer. Pin the stocking together at the top 3-4” on the toe side and sew that small amount.

Step 8:

Finger press open the seam. Fold the cuff in half to find the center point and align it with the right side of the cuff facing the wrong side of the stocking. Pin the top of the cuff to the top of the stocking and stitch the seam.

Step 9:

Understitch the seam to keep the cuff in place. Be sure the seam faces toward the stocking; this helps the cuff roll slightly toward the stocking. Now it is time to finish stitching the stocking. Place the stocking, right sides together, matching the cut edges.

Step 10:

Also, insert the stocking hanger as shown. Beginning at the top of the stocking on the heel side, stitch around the entire stocking, overlapping the side already stitched by a few stitches. Since the stocking is felt and will not ravel there is no need to clean finish the seams unless you would like to.

Step 11:

Turn the stocking right side out forming the toe and heel.

Step 12:

Fill the stocking with the kitty toys and treats. Congratulations on completing the “Meowy Treats” stocking for your little feline friend.
