Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Many shy away from stitching on purchased knit garments. With a couple of tricks, you’ll learn how easy it is.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence.

    Step 2:
Choose the smallest hoop for the machine that will fit the design. Hoop the layer of sticky tearaway stabilizer and then tear away the protective paper exposing the adhesive.

    Step 3:
Cut out around the paper template of the design. Fold up the cuff on the cap if there is one and center the design as desired on the cap. Slip the hooped stabilizer inside the cap.

    Step 4:
Press the fabric onto the stabilizer to adhere it, every so slightly stretching the width of the fabric as if it were stretched on the head. It may be necessary to place a few pins to make sure the fabric is held securely to the stabilizer. Just be sure that the pins are well out of the way of the stitching and presser foot. Now bring the back portion of the cap up over the hoop toward the top of the hoop.

    Step 5:
Use painters or packing tape to keep the excess fabric away from the sewing filed. Load the design on the machine and place the hoop on the machine. Align the needle to the center of the paper template. Remove the paper template and then place two layers of water soluble stabilizer on top of the fabric. Check once more to make sure the fabric is out of the way and that the pins (if used) are well out of the stitching field and presser foot.

    Step 6:
Slow down the machine and start the machine to stitch the first thread color. Use tweezers to be sure the fabric is kept out of the swing field. Stitch the colors following the color sequence.

    Step 7:
After the design has finished stitching trim any jump threads. Carefully remove the pins from the fabric. Remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizers.

A new ski cap ready to wear on the slopes - now if only it would snow!
