Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Embroidered center piece design 92717 finished size is 7" H x 10 7/8" W 2 reindeer pieces are 10" H x 4 1/4" W design 92722. The top and bottom embroidered pieces are 4 7/8" H x 14 3/8" W top design 92732 bottom design 92724. The borders (printed fabric) for the center piece, top and bottom measures 1 3/4" H x 10 7/8" W Side pieces (2) measures 10 1/4" H x 1 3/4" W Corner pieces (4) measures 5" H x 4 3/8" W. You will need to add 1/4" seam allowance to all pieces on all sides. Bias tape needed is 90" for the perimeter of the wall hanging plus 15" for mitered corners and finished ends. You can use purchased bias tape instead of making your own. To make your own bias tape decide on the width, I cut my strips 2" wide on diagonal. Stitch strips together using 1/4" seams. Press seams open. Fold strip wrong sides together in half and press the entire length of strip.

Next open and press up 1/4" along one side of the strip. You are now ready to apply the bias tape to the wall hanging. Decide on starting point, never start at a corner, or at the top of the wall hanging. With right sides together place raw edge of binding with raw edge of the wall hanging, the pressed edge will be free and to the left of the seam line.

Start stitching 4" from the beginning of the strip, stitching through all layers. For mitered corners, stop stitching 1/4" from corner, backstitch a couple of stitches, remove wall hanging from under needle. Rotate wall hanging a quarter turn and fold binding straight up away from corner, forming a 45 degree angle fold. Bring binding straight down in line with the next edge to be sewn, leaving top fold even with raw edge of previously sewn side. Begin stitching at top edge, sewing through all layers. To finish end of binding fold beginning end wrong sides together about 3/4", next lay ending binding over starting binding and stitch through all layers about 1" beyond beginning fold. The beginning fold will be concealed when binding is turned to back of wall hanging.

Step 1:

Gather all supplies needed and read through the instructions.

Step 2:

Mirror image design 92722, you will need one reindeer facing left and one facing right.

Step 3:

Merge design 92724 together so you will have three birds, this makes it easier to line up the design.

Step 4:

Print templates of each design. 1 left side and 1 right side of reindeer and 1 of the 3 birds merged, or the three individual birds.

Step 5:

Place templates of each design on off white fabric allowing space between each design so you can add seam allowance to each.

Step 6:

Run designs, then cut out each piece needed, remembering to add seam allowance.

Step 7:

Stitch the top and bottom border pieces (printed fabric) to the center Merry Christmas to All design.

Step 8:

Stitch the 2 side border pieces(printed fabric) to the center Merry Christmas to All design.

Step 9:

Stitch top embroidered piece Bells and Holly to top border piece, next stitch embroidered piece Birds to bottom border piece.

Step 10:

Stitch corner pieces to top and bottom of the embroidered reindeer left and right pieces.

Step 11:

Stitch side pieces to wall hanging, be sure that the reindeer facing right is stitched to the left side and the reindeer facing left is stitched to the right side.

Step 12:

Lay the fabric you are using for the back of the wall hanging facing wrong side up, next lay the batting, then the pieced wall hanging right side up. Baste by hand around the piece through all layers.

Step 13:

To give it a quilted look, stitch in the ditch around all blocks.

Step 14:

Finish by binding the wall hanging with the bias tape. See General instructions for making and attaching the bias tape.

Step 15:

Make and attach hanging sleeve, you may prefer to make and attach tabs to fit the rod you will be using to hang the wall hanging. To make hanging sleeve, use a piece of the fabric you used for the backside or you can use a piece of muslin. For a 4"wide sleeve, cut 8 1/2" wide straight-grain strip 2" shorter than the width of the hanging. Machine hem both narrow ends. Next fold the strip length wise in half wrong sides together and press. Open strip, and bring each edge to the center crease, and press. Turn so the right sides are together and stitch using a 1/4"seam, stitch along the raw edges, turn to right side. You will note the back side of tube is not as full as the front. This is to allow for the thickness of the rod you will be using to hang wall hanging. Lay the sleeve on the back side of the hanging about 1" from top of hanging and whip stitch to the back side of the hanging top and bottom.
