Materials
  • For each mat:
  • 2 pieces white cotton fabric to fit hoop
  • Poly mesh stabilizer
  • Embroidery thread
  • Ric rac to match embroidery thread
  • 1 piece felt or batting
  • Sewing thread to match fabric

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
To make these Coffee Mats the designs are stitched, marked to shape and ric rac added around the edge. A piece of felt is added for padding and a second piece of fabric is added for the back. Cut the shape round, square, rectangular, oval - basically any shape you chose. Stitch several and make them all different shapes or all the same.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence.

    Step 2:
Hoop one piece of fabric with one layer of poly mesh stabilizer. Load the design on the machine and place the hoop on the machine. Stitch the design.

    Step 3:
After the design has finished stitching remove the fabric from the hoop but leave the stabilizer in place. Decide on the shape you’d like the Coffee Mat and mark the fabric to include a seam allowance.

    Step 4:
Press the ric rac to remove the folds and pin it in place along the mark. Baste the rick rack in place through the center of the trim.

    Step 5:
Place a piece of felt behind the piece and baste it in place along the last stitching line. Now place a piece of fabric over the front of the design and pin in place. Flip the piece over so the last stitching on the felt shows. Stitch around all sides using the first stitching as a guide; leave an opening in the bottom for turning.

    Step 6:
Trim around all the edges, press up the bottom edge and turn the piece right side out through the opening. Hand stitch the opening closed. Press the piece lightly.

    Step 7:
Repeat the steps of hooping, drawing the shape and adding ric rac.

    Step 8:
Continue by basting on the ric rac, adding the felt and back lining piece. Turn the piece right side out through the opening and hand stitch the opening closed.
