Begin with a simple hat, stitch embroidery designs and trim with complementary Soutache braid.
Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Match the red and blue embroidery threads to the Soutache braid.

Step 3:
In software resize and align the designs using the tools to space and center the designs evenly. This will work only if the hat band is not curved. Print the paper template. If not using this method, print templates of the single designs and space them around the band for embroidery as desired. Cut out the template and align it on the hat as planned.

Step 4:
Hoop tearaway stabilizer in the hoop and lay the hoop on a gridded board so the centers at the top, bottom and sides of the hoop align to the grid marks on the board. Spray the hoop with temporary spray adhesive and then align the top folded edge of the band along a straight grid line and pin in place.

Step 5:
Load the design on the machine. Place the hoop on the machine and align the needle to the center of the template. Remove the paper template and start the machine to stitch the designs.

Step 6:
After the designs finish stitching remove the hat from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer. Measure around the brim of the hat and cut a piece each of the red and blue Soutache braid plus a few extra inches for tucking the ends under the tape. Use a seam ripper to open a few stitches of the tape covering the band edge.

Step 7:
To sew the blue braid to the bottom of the hat, tuck one end of the braid under the tape and stitch the braid all the way around using the same blue embroidery thread that was used for stitching the design. Repeat for the red braid using the matching red embroidery thread.
