Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
The picnic blanket used for this project was purchased. The blanket has a vinyl, waterproof backing, and folds up into a neat little package with a flap and hook and loop closure to hold the blanket in place and a handle for carrying the blanket. The flap was embroidered with the design. The machine used to embroider the project didn’t have any problems going through the fabric and vinyl but test your machine to be sure it will handle stitching through vinyl if the blanket you choose has this feature.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence.

    Step 2:
This blanket has a flap with a hook and loop closure to hold the blanket in a nice little package with a handle. Open up the flap and open up the blanket.

    Step 3:
Cut out the paper template. Find the center of the flap from above the hook and loop tape and below the bottom of the handle. Center and pin the design template to the flap. Hoop a piece of tearaway stabilizer (the vinyl backing is black on this blanket so a black cutaway was used for the project). Spray the backing with temporary spray adhesive. Note: in place of the cutaway and spray, an adhesive cutaway stabilizer could be used.

    Step 4:
Align the flap squarely in the hoop and press the flap to the adhesive.

    Step 5:
Load the “Ants with Watermelon” design on the machine and rotate the design on the machine (if needed). Load the hoop on the machine and align the needle to the center of the template. Remove the paper template, and place a piece of water soluble stabilizer on top (if the fabric requires it).

    Step 6:
Start the machine and stitch the design following the color sequence.

    Step 7:
After the design has finished stitching, remove the flap from the hoop and cutaway the excess stabilizer. Remove the water soluble topper.

    Step 8:
The blanket is complete at this point. Enjoy it this way, or for more decoration on the project, add some embroidered ants!

    Step 9:
Repeat the process of hooping and stitching the blanket to add the embroidered “Ants” as desired.

    Step 10:
Add as many or as few as you wish. They can be resized and marching all around the blanket or put just into the corners as shown. Children will delight in the little embroidered creatures scurrying on their picnic blanket.

    Step 11:
Have fun using your new picnic blanket. After use, just fold it up for easy storage and the next use.
