2- 12” x 12” medium weight white cotton fabric

2- 12” x 12” red plaid fabric

Scrap of red fabric to make covered buttons

12” pillow form

5-5/8” buttons to cover

Small amount of fusible interfacing

Embroidery thread as specified in design

Tearaway stabilizer

Sewing thread to coordinate with the fabrics.

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

The simplicity of the embroidery design adds to the elegance of this pillow. Stitch the design, create scallops, assemble the pillow cover and then add self-covered buttons to finish the look. You’ll want to make several for gifts this year.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a template of the embroidery design.

Step 2:

Find the center of one of the pieces of white fabric and center the embroidery template over the center of the fabric. Hoop the fabric with a piece of tearaway stabilizer.

Step 3:

Load the “Swirl Deer” design on the machine and center the needle over the center of the template.

Step 4:

Stitch the design.

Step 5:

Remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the stabilizer. Now it is time to create the scallops. On the back side of the fabric, determine where the bottom of the scallop will be. For the project, the button was placed where the bottom of the scallop was to be and a line drawn with a pencil at the bottom of the button.

Step 6:

Use a piece of paper to form the scallops. This paper was 12” long and five scallops were drawn 2 3/8” on center. Adjust this as needed to fit your project. Cut out the scallops from the paper and position the scallop template on the back side of the embroidered fabric placing the center of the middle scallop at the line that was drawn below the button. Trace along the scallops with a pencil; this will be the stitching line for the scallops. With right sides together, pin the second piece of white fabric to the embroidered piece. Using a short (1.5mm) stitch length, stitch along the pencil line of the scallops.

Step 7:

Trim the excess fabric leaving about 3/16” seam and clip the points. Turn the fabric right side out and carefully press the scallops. Position the embroidered piece on top of one of the pieces of plaid fabric; use a ruler to help guide the alignment. For the project, the point of the scallop was 6” below the top of the plaid fabric for the pillow. A line was drawn and the excess fabric cut off.

Step 8:

Pin the embroidered fabric to the top of the pillow. With right sides together, pin the second piece of plaid fabric over the first pinning all the layers together.

Step 9:

Stitch along three sides using ¼” seam allowances. At the bottom sew the bottom closed leaving an opening for turning the pillow to the right side. Press the pillow seams.

Step 10:

To make the covered buttons, press the interfacing to the back of the scrap plaid fabric following the manufacturer’s directions. Follow the directions on the package back to cover the buttons.

Step 11:

Sew one button in the center of each scallop through the white fabrics only.

Step 12:

Insert the pillow form into the cover, turn in the raw edges at the lower seam and hand stitch the seam closed.

Step 13:

Enjoy the beautiful pillow you have created.
