Placemats with Heart Pockets Embroidery Project

Remove from hoop and trim to desired pocket size adding seam allowance. I trimmed this to 5” wide x 7” tall. This could work well trimmed at 5 x 6 as well.

Using my sewing machine I sewed the seam allowance down with a decorative stitch before I actually sewed the pocket to the placemat. I also added a small strip of fabric to the top of the pocket for a little added pizazz. It is 1" wide and folded to the wrong side to hide the raw edges, press and stitch to pocket.

Sew pocket to placemat. I used a straight stitch very close to the edge of the pocket using matching thread.

I also made a pocket using a heart shape. Stitch out the design and trim to desired pocket size plus seam allowance. This piece is trimmed 5” tall x 7” wide.

Put a little glue from a glue stick around the back edge and press with an iron to secure seam allowance. This will hold it in place to make the stitching much easier to do.

Stitch down seam allowance along the edge so the top of the pocket is secured then stitch the pocket to the placemat. I used the purple thread from the flower design to stitch the pocket to the placemat.

Add utensils and a napkin!
