Whether you lay this small quilt on the table or hang it on a wall it is sure to please. The beach hut blocks are appliqued and quilted in the hoop. The borders are quilted and attached to the beach hut blocks at your sewing machine.
For each appliqued block cut: a. 2 8” x 6” rectangles of light blue fabric b. 1 4 ½” x 3 ½” of striped fabric for the main fabric of the beach hut c. 1 3 ½” x 2 ¼” of contrasting fabric for the roof d. 1 3” x 2” of contrasting fabric for the door e. Cut 3 pieces of Heat N Bond Lite® the same sizes as fabric b, c and d f. 1 8” x 6” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting g. No show stabilizer to fit your hoop
Step 2:
Spray each applique piece with Magic Sizing and press 2 or 3 times and then apply the Heat N Bond Lite® to the back of each piece.

Tautly hoop the no show stabilizer; run color stop (CS) 1 in a neutral color as a placement line for the front fabric.
Step 4:
Spray adhesive on the back of the front fabric; run CS 2 in water soluble thread in the top of the machine only, as a tack down. Water soluble thread is used as if any of it shows after you have joined your blocks you can remove this line of stitches by rubbing them with a damp sponge and pull the corresponding bobbin stitches off of the back of the project. Position the front fabric over the placement line so that the fabric exceeds the placement line by ½” on all sides.

Step 5:
Color stops 3 through 9 can be run in the same color thread that you will want to use to stitch the satin borders down the sides of the beach hut. Though colored threads are listed to coordinate with the fabrics used in the sample, be free to switch them up to match your fabrics. Run color stop 3 as a placement line for the main beach hut fabric.

Step 6:
Remove the paper from the main fabric applique piece, spray a little adhesive on the back and positon the fabric over the placement line. Run CS 4 to tack down the fabric.

Step 7:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, and trim the applique right next to the tack down stitches; press the applique with an applique iron.

Step 8:
Run CS 5 as a placement line for the roof.

Step 9:
Remove the Heat N Bond Lite® paper from the roof fabric, spray with adhesive and position the fabric over the placement lines; tack down the roof fabric with CS 6.

Run CS 7 as a placement line for the door.

Position the door fabric as instructed in Step 9. Run CS 8 to tack down the door.

Step 12:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, and trim the roof and door appliques right next to the tack down stitching. Press the appliques.

Step 13:
Follow the color chart until you reach the last two color stops.

Step 14:
Before you sew the last two color stops remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Place the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray adhesive on the back of the Battilizer® and position over the back of the embroidery aligning the Battilizer® with the fabric on the front of the hoop. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the back fabric and position over the Battilizer®.

Step 15:
Return the hoop to the machine and run the next to last color stop with water soluble thread to tack down all three layers together.

Step 16:
Change the top thread to the color you want to use for the quilting. Before you start running the last color stop to stitch the quilting bring the bobbin thread to the top of the work by feeding the top thread through the presser foot and while holding onto it press the needle up button twice on your machine. This will bring the bobbin thread up, pull the bobbin thread out and hold on to it while you run an inch or so of the quilting stitches, stop the machine and trim off the threads. This will keep the back of the work nice without tangles of thread tails and knots. Complete the quilting.

Step 17:
Lay the ¼” marking off a see through ruler along the water soluble thread tack down stitches and trim all sides to ¼” seam allowances. Complete the other 4 blocks using the same 17 steps.

Cut the remaining fabrics to complete the project: a. Cut 3 1” strips the width of the light blue fabric for sashing b. Cut 2 2” strips the width of the light blue fabric for sashing c. Cut 2 2 ½” strips of the light blue fabric for the top border d. Cut 1 3” strip of the light blue fabric for the back of the bottom border e. Cut 1 3” strip of the wooden plank print for the bottom border f. Cut 1 2” strip of the wooden plank print for the bottom sashing g. Cut 1 3” x 27” strip of Battilizer® for the bottom border h. Cut 1 2 ½” strip of Battilizer® for the top border i. Cut 5 3” squares or assorted stripe and solid fabrics for the prairie points j. Cut 3 2 ¼” strips of striped fabric for binding

Step 19:
Spray the 1” and 2” strips of light blue fabric and the 2” strip of the wooden plank fabric with Magic Sizing® and press; fold the 2” strips in half lengthwise and press.

Lay out the appliqued blocks in the order in which you wish them to be in the table runner.

Place a 1” sashing strip, right sides together, on the back of your first block; trim the sashing so that approximately ½” extends from each end of the block; clip or pin into place.
Step 22:
At the same time, place the folded 2” sashing strip to the front of the block, raw edges of the strip aligned with the raw edges of the block and the back strip. Trim the strip so that approximately ½” of the strip extends beyond the top and bottom of the block.

Step 23:
Using a stitch length of 3mm, stitch though all layers with an accurate ¼” seam.

Iron the 1” strip out away from the block.

Place your 2nd block next to the first block, turn the 2nd block face down and slide underneath the 1” sashing strip, making sure that the top and the bottoms of the two blocks are aligned.

Stitch the 1” strip to the second block with an accurate ¼” seam allowance.

Step 27:
When you open out the second block the seam allowances of the two blocks should butt up to each other without gaps or overlaps. Press this seam flat. Then press the folded two” sashing strip over the exposed seam allowances.

Edge stitch the folded sashing strip over the seam allowances. Add the other three appliqued blocks following Steps 21 through 27.

Trim both long sides of the applique blocks to remove the excess sashing and square the blocks.
Step 30:
To prepare the top and bottom borders, spray adhesive on the 3” strip of Battilizer® and position the 3” strip of wooden plank fabric on the top. Spray the back of the Battilizer® and position the 3” strip of light blue fabric on the back. Prepare the 2 ½” top border strip in the same fashion.

Using the same techniques as outlined in Steps 21 through 26 attach a 1” light blue strip to the back and the 2” wooden plank strip to the front of the bottom of the applique blocks.

Stitch the bottom border to the 1” strip the same way you joined the blocks. The blue side of the bottom border should be aligned with the blue 1” strip.

This step is optional. Before you stitch the 2” folded sashing strip over the bottom border you can add machine quilting by sewing back and forth across the plank print to quilt the bottom border. Fold over the top sashing and edge stitch in place.

Attach the top sashing strips to the top edge of the applique blocks.

Before folding and stitching down the top sashing strip use a serpentine or other decorative stitch to quilt the top border. Fold over the top sashing and edge stitch into place.

Press the 5 3” squares in half diagonally and then fold over again and press to make the prairie points.

Arrange the prairie points as desired with the raw edges aligned with the top of the quilt and overlapping them approximately ½”. Baste the prairie points to the quilt top within the ¼” seam allowance.
