Notes & Instructions This sketch is a copy of a lithograph by Henri Matisse made of the french author Colette three years before her death in 1951. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) developed his portrait technique when, as a student, he doodled . His technique of capturing the essence of the model by focusing on the asymmetry of the features which make the face unique was ridiculed by his teachers and fellow students. He would meet the subject, then wait a few days before doing his drawings, preferring to use emotion and memory without a live model. He followed what he thought of as the Northern School which including lithographer Albrecht Drer.
