Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Ties are cut on the bias of the fabric. The bias of the fabric has the most stretch. Great care must be taken in working with and embroidering on bias cut fabric; do not over-handle the fabric. Minimal if any pressing should be done and if pressing is needed, it should be done with a dry iron in the direction of the straight grain of the fabric. Hooping the tie fabric would cause crushing of the fibers, so the stabilizer is hooped and a temporary spray adhesive is used to adhere the fabric to the stabilizer for embroidery.

    Step 1:
Gather all the supplies and read through the instructions before beginning. You may wish to practice on a tie purchased from a thrift store before embroidering on the actual project. Use a color wheel to help decide which thread colors to use. Print out the templates at actual size to help decide placement of the design on the tie.

    Step 2:
Use a seam ripper to remove the tag on the back side of the tie if there is one; not all ties will have one. Carefully remove the stitching along the seam line. Remove only enough stitching to open up the tie so it will lie flat in the embroidery hoop for stitching.

    Step 3:
At the tip of the tie will be a lining. Turn the lining inside out. Remove the stitching on each side and toward the point only enough to allow the tie to lie flat in the hoop and to get the lining out of the way of the stitching.

    Step 4:

Decide on the placement of the design. Placement will depend on the size of the design, preference of the wearer, and length of the tie. Standard placement is anywhere from 1 ½” to 6” from the tip. The ties being embroidered for this project are for a man 6’3”, so the design placement will be centered 6” from the tip. Use a ruler to measure from the tip and then align the template to the measurement. If possible, have the wearer try on the tie to see if the placement is satisfactory.

    Step 5:
Measure and center the placement of the design between the soft folds of the tie.

    Step 6:
Pin the template in place to align the design at the machine.

    Step 7:

Tape or pin the tie lining and interfacing out of the way. (Be very careful that the pins will not accidentally fall into the embroidery module.)

    Step 8:
Hoop a single layer of tearaway stabilizer. Spray with temporary spray adhesive.

    Step 9:
Center and align the fabric in the hoop, smoothing the fabric into place carefully.

    Step 10:
Load the Design "Tattoo Celtic Cross" into the machine. Place the hoop on the machine and align the needle to the center of the template.

    Step 11:
Remove the paper template and begin the embroidery following the color sequence. Slow down the machine speed if necessary.

    Step 12:
    Stitch the second color.

    Step 13:
Carefully remove the stabilizer from the back of the design.

    Step 14:

    Step 16:

Smooth the interfacing back into place over the lining.

    Step 17:
Fold under the original edge at the center back seam, and pin in place.

    Step 18:
Hand stitch the seam as it was originally done.

    Step 19:
Hand stitch the label  in place.

    Step 20:
Be sure the tie looks the same as it was originally stitched.

    Step 21:
