    Preface:
Using a commercial apron pattern, choose coffee themed fabrics from a coordinated fabric line, and embroider the apron skirt with coffee words in colorful embroidery threads to coordinate with the fabrics. There are many words to choose from; the ones used in this project are listed. Follow the pattern instructions for sewing the apron together. The pattern used for this project is Simplicity 3544, View C. Instead of the ruffle being sewn at the bottom of the skirt, a band of coordinating fabric was cut and sewn. Embroidery editing software is used to extract the coffee themed text only from four of the chosen embroidery designs. Embroidery of coffee themed words was done on the skirt front prior to sewing the apron together.

    Step 1:
Gather all the supplies needed for the project. Prepare the designs as listed in step 2 below, and then print out the designs at actual size. Read through the commercial pattern instructions before beginning the cutting and sewing of the apron.

    Step 2:
For the following designs, use embroidery editing software to extract only the text out of the designs: AnnTheGran “Java Junkie”, AnnTheGran “Daily Grind”, AnnTheGran “Coffee Beans”, Great Notions “Coffee Lovers Applique”. Save each of the extracted text-only designs as individual files. Determine the embroidery thread color for all of the text designs.

    Step 3:
Following the pattern layout and cutting instructions; cut out the fabric. Find the skirt front piece. Cut out the printed text designs from the paper. Place them around the skirt front piece in a haphazard layout. Pin each paper design in place to the skirt front fabric.

    Step 4:
One by one, hoop the skirt fabric with stabilizer and embroider each text design with the embroidery thread color chosen in step 2.

    Step 5:
The colorful embroidery threads will show up beautifully even on printed fabrics.

    Step 6:
Carefully remove the stabilizer from the back of the embroidery design.

    Step 7:
Repeat the embroidery processing, using the embroidery thread color chosen for each word.

    Step 8:
From here, follow the commercial pattern instructions to sew the apron together. Sew the skirt back pieces to the skirt front and serge or otherwise finish the seam allowances, then press the seam allowances. Attach the band to the skirt bottom by placing right side of the band to the wrong side of the skirt; sew the band onto the skirt bottom.

    Step 9:
Fold and press under the remaining long edge of the band ¼”, then on the right side of the apron skirt, place the folded band edge over the stitching and press in place.

    Step 10:
Stitch the band in place along the folded edge turning under the edges at the center back.

    Step 11:
Gather the top edge of the skirt with basting threads or use a ruffle attachment for the machine.

    Step 12:
Construct the bib of the apron and center the bottom edge of the bib at the top of the skirt, right sides together, meeting cut edges.

    Step 13:
Construct the apron waistband and ties. Insert the ties into the waistband and pin in place.

    Step 14:
Sew along both edges of the waistband, catching the bib in the stitching.

    Step 15:
Determine the placement of the straps on the apron bib and waistband.

    Step 16:
Sew the straps to the bib using a button for each strap.

    Step 17:
