POTW – Christmas Advent Calendar
By Marlene Stewart
You are limited only by your imagination! Can you think of ideas (25) for the embroidery enthusiast or crafter in your life? Wrapped chocolates are a favorite but they would have to be purchased just nanoseconds before they were placed in the calendar pockets - because they would not last in this house! And now on with Marlene’s instructions!
Step 1:
Individual Calendar Squares:
Hoop a 4 x 4 with felt and good tearaway stabilizer. Stitch the design up to the first single stitch. Take the hoop out of the machine (do not unhoop) and trim around the single stitched border.
Step 2:
Place hoop back into the machine and stitch up to the next single stitch. Remove from machine, turn the hoop over and center a 4″ piece of fabric, attaching securely.
Step 3:
Put back into the machine - stitch the next border. Trim around the border on the backside. Place back into the machine and stitch the remainder. Tear off the stabilizer.
Step 4:
Assembly:
Take the heavy fabric (26″ square or larger). Fold in half and mark or run a row of pins up and down the center fold.
Step 5:
Open the fabric and fold in half the other way, marking the fold up and down. Lay the fabric flat, you should have a mark going up and down and across exactly center.
Step 6:
Take the #13 square (baby w/gift) and glue it where the marking meet in the very center. The following your center horizontal line, secure the numbers in order 1/2″ apart. When that row is done, measure 1/2 inch above or below the completed row for the next set of consecutive set of numbers.
Step 7:
All of the calendar squares are placed 1/2″ apart starting from the center outwards.
Step 8:
After securing all the squares be sure to take out any pins that were used.
Step 9:
When completed fold the five 8″x 2″ pieces of fabric in half lengthwise. Space evenly at the top of the calendar, one on each side, three lined up in the center. Loop each of these over the top and join by sewing together with a button in front.
Hi, my name is Marlene Stewart. I was born in Indiana and really have a strange career path of - secretary at a brokerage firm in Chicago. In 1972 I moved to Arkansas and became owner of a TV/VCR sales and repair, then school insurance coordinator, Realtor, bakery owner, arts & crafts, now digitize.
I began teaching myself to digitize in 1992 after I purchased my first embroidery software and Brother PE150 embroidery machine since then I have upgraded software and machines.
My husband is retired from the U.S. Air Force and I have a 36 year old son. My favorite part of the day is evening when my husband and I cuddle with a blanket and watch science fiction movies. I love digitizing, my husband calls it a love affair and admire the works of Thomas Kinkade.
