Satin Polyester 5"x 7" or any lightweight fabric

Darkout drapery fabric or Baby Dri 5 x 7"

Tear-away stabilizer (I also use a topping when stitching satin)

Elastic or ribbon - I used Dritz beaded cord elastic 4.5m - measure at the back of your head temple to temple to find how much you need. I used a 13" piece for this project.

Final Product: What You Will Create

Step 1:

Hoop with a good tear-away stabilizer. Spray lightly with a non-gumming adhesive, then smooth a piece of satin on top. Complete any of the designs. Using the mask pattern, sew the placement stitch for the mask backing. Take the hoop out of the machine (don’t un-hoop) and trim close to the single stitch. Turn the hoop over and attach a piece of drapery darkout fabric or Baby Dri, placing the plastic side against the stabilizer. (All of these fabrics and elastic are sold at Hobby Lobby and Hancock Fabrics.)

Stitch out the next color to tack down the backing. Take out of the machine turn the hoop over and trim close to the pattern. There are placement stitches on both sides in back of the mask for the elastic or ribbon.

Step 2:

Place an end of the elastic on each side of the mask with the ends just outside the edge, there are stitches in the pattern for placement.

Step 3:

Gather the elastic in the center and secure so that it does not get sewn. Make sure that the only elastic touching the edges are the ends. Caution: it's easy to get a piece that you don't want, sewn in the final satin.

Step 4:

Place back in the machine and complete.

I began teaching myself to digitize in 1992 after I purchased my first embroidery software and Brother PE150 embroidery machine since then I have upgraded software and machines. My husband is retired from the U.S. Air Force and I have a 36 year old son. My favorite part of the day is evening when my husband and I cuddle with a blanket and watch science fiction movies. I love digitizing, my husband calls it a love affair and admire the works of Thomas Kinkade.
