Preface:
Embroidery This quilt requires the use of a 5” x 7”
hoop for the central Hummingbird design. A 4” hoop may be used for the
smaller corner designs. Cut the piece of embroidery fabric into five
11½” x 9” pieces.

Stabilize Linen/Cotton Fabric: We suggest either an iron-on or sticky stabilizer for all cross stitch. Stabilize the Linen/Cotton fabric and hoop the fabric. Five Hummingbirds Design Details Files:
Print out and refer to each of the five Hummingbirds design details
files, included with each machine design file to stitch the design in
the correct Color Stop order. Select the correct filetype
and stitch each of the four small corner Hummingbirds and trim to
measure 4½” square. After assembling the quilt following instructions
below, you will then center and embroider Lucifer with Hedge Nettle onto
the center panel of the quilt.

Cutting & Assembling Instructions Print out the pattern pieces (click on images to the left for patterns)
and make templates of A & B using a medium weight cardboard or
template plastic. Trace Template B onto the remaining piece of
linen/cotton fabric and cut. This piece is still not embroidered.
Step 2:
To make the four corner triangles surrounding the center hummingbird,
cut four Template A triangles from the dark green print. With right
sides together sew each triangle to center octagon along diagonal edges,
extending green print triangle points ¼” (Diagram A); press seams
towards corners.

Trim the strip of medium green print and the strip of dark green print
to measure 1½” wide, and the hummingbird print to measure 2½” wide. Sew
the long sides of the medium green print strip and the dark green print
strip to either side of Hummingbird print strip. Press seams towards
medium green print. Cut strip unit into four 6½” strip units (Diagram
C).

Refer to photo for placement of each Hummingbird, and construct your Sampler in three rows.
• First row contains Ruby Throat, one strip unit and Rufous. • Second row contains one strip unit, Lucifer center square and a second strip unit. • Third row contains Anna, one strip unit and Broad-billed.
Make
certain you keep the dark green print to the center of the design; this
will form the border around the center Hummingbird square. After you
construct the rows, sew the three rows together, matching seams. Press
seams away from stitched motifs.
Step 5:
Complete Center Block Embroidery After assembling
quilt top, hoop the center block and work the embroidery of the Lucifer
with Hedge Nettle design on the linen fabric.
Step 6:
Finishing Layer quilt, batting and large piece of
dark green print; baste or pin. We machine quilted around the center
square with gold metallic thread, and along each strip unit. After
quilting your design as desired, trim all excess batting, then trim
excess backing to 1” all around quilted Sampler. To construct
selfbinding, fold in ½” of backing towards picture. Fold again and pin
and sew to quilt.
