Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
A floral Mandala design embroidered on napkins in Fall colors.

Mandalas are a popular trend in art.  Mandala Art is a Sanskrit word for “magic circle”.  'Mandala' has become a general term for geometrical patterns that are mostly circular but can be of other various shapes.  They are typically produced on paper or cloth.   Favorite paper products are  Mandala drawing or coloring books used for relaxation and/or concentration.  Mandala embroidery designs are intricate and tend to have high stitch counts.  The Mandala outline showcases the geometric design with a lower stitch count.

    Step 1:
Gather & prepare the materials needed for the project.  Read the directions before you begin the project.  Iron and lightly starch the fabric.

    Step 2:
An essential tool for embroidery position and placement is a design template.  A design template is a printout of the actual size of the design.  It has the center of the design identified, as well as the horizontal and vertical axis lines. An embroidery program can print a template of any design. (Embrilliance Essentials embroidery software program was used to print the design template).

    Print the design template.

    Step 3:
Fold all of the edges down 1/4".  Press on the fold line.

    Step 4:
Fold the edge over again.  Press on the fold line.

    Step 5:
Top stitch around the sides of the napkin.

Repeat steps 3, 4, & 5 on each napkin you are making in your set.

    Step 6:
Lay a straight edge at a diagonal from corner to corner on the napkin.  Draw a diagonal line along the straight edge using a fabric marker.

    Step 7:
Use the diagonal line and the design template as a placement guide.

    Step 8:
The size of the design is 2.3"x3.5" with a stitch count of 4383.  Hoop one piece of light weight (2.0) cut away stabilizer.

Mark the center on the stabilizer.  Match the center on the design template with the center on the stabilizer.  Match the horizontal and vertical points on the hoop and the design template.

Use a light mist of 505 Temporary Adhesive spray on the stabilizer.  Press the fabric onto the stabilizer.  Use wonder pins to secure the fabric on the stabilizer.

    Step 9:
Load the design on the machine.  A 75/11 size embroidery needle is suggested for this project.  Attach the hoop to the machine.  Check the stitching field area to make sure there is nothing in the way.  Use the color guide to stitch the design.

    Step 10:
Once the design has completed stitching, remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the napkin from the hoop.  Trim excess stabilizer from around the design leaving about 1/2" margin.

    Step 11:
You have completed a Mandala Napkin.  Repeat the steps for each napkin in your set.

    Step 12:
    Great job!

Beautiful things are made one stitch at a time...
