Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Brighten your favorite summer nook with a splash of color from an appliqued tulip pillow.  The appliqued embroidery technique uses fabric pieces in the design.  An appliqued design will use placement, tack down, and finishing stitches.  The tulip design is available in 3 sizes.  The largest size was used for the pillow project.  A single needle embroidery machine was used to embroider this project.

    Step 1:
Gather & prepare the materials needed for the project.  Read the directions before you begin the project.  Iron and lightly starch the fabric.  Follow package directions to adhere the Hotfix Adhesive to the 6"x9" & 2.5"x3" pieces of fabric.  Print a design template.  Embrilliance Essentials embroidery software was used to print the template.

    Step 2:
Use the design template as a placement tool on the pillow cover. Match the center points on the design template and pillow cover.  Use the vertical and horizontal axis as guide points.  Pin the template in place on the pillow cover.

    Step 3:
Hoop one piece of medium weight cut away stabilizer.  Mark the center and axis points on the stabilizer.

Turn the pillow cover inside out.  Match the center and axis points on the pillow cover & stabilizer.  Lightly mist the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Adhesive spray.  Pin the pillow cover to the stabilizer.  The pillow surface should be smooth and wrinkle free.  Secure fabric to stabilizer with Wonder Pins.

    Step 4:
Load the design onto the machine. Attach the embroidery hoop.  Check the needle and bobbin.  Pin or clip the pillow cover away from the stitching field.

Embroider the first color.   These are the placement stitches for the first piece of fabric.  Place one 6"x9" piece of fabric over the placement stitches.  The next color is the tack down stitches.  Stitch the tack down stitches.  Then, remove the hoop from the machine, but do not remove the project from the hoop.  Carefully trim the excess fabric from around the leaves.  Re-attach the hoop.  Embroider the finishing stitches on the leaves.

    Step 5:
Follow the applique process from Step 4 for each tulip.  Embroider the placement stitches for the first tulip.  Place a 2.5"x3" piece of fabric over the placement stitches.  Embroider the tack down stitches.  Remove the hoop from the machine, but do not remove the project from the hoop.  Carefully trim the excess fabric from around the tulip.  Re-attach the hoop.  Embroider the finishing stitches on the first tulip.

    Step 6:
Repeat Step 5 for the last two tulips.

    Step 7:
After the design has been embroidered, remove the project from the hoop.  Clip long threads if needed.  Trim excess stabilizer from around the design leaving about an 1/2" margin.

    Step 8:
Trim the pillow cover right side out.  Refer to the Hotfix Adhesive package directions to bond the appliqued fabric (tulips & leaves) to the base fabric (pillow cover) with a hot iron.

    Step 9:
Put the pillow insert inside the pillow cover.  You have completed an appliqued 'Tulip Pillow Cover'.  Congrats!

Beautiful things are made one stitch at a time...
