I have used felt as the backing for this mat to provide a layer of padding for the machine to sit on which on certain surfaces can help reduce vibration or machine noise.
Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Have a copy of the color sequence on hand to refer to.

Step 2:
From the solid fabric, cut a rectangle 9 ½” long x 18” wide. From the bottom mark up 4 ¾” which represents the fold line, then from the left side, mark in at 5” and 10”, this will be the sections of the pockets. Then measure and mark the centre of each section for the middle of the embroidery design. Hoop the stabilizer and stitch out each design. You may need to do 1,2 or 3 hoopings depending how big your hoop is.

Step 3:
Once the designs have stitched out, give them a press and fold the fabric in half, press again. Lay the embroidered panel ontop of the patterned fabric positioning it at the bottom and matching all edges. Pin it in place then stitch down each side and along the 5” and 10” marking to form the pockets. Then lay that over the felt, right side up and pin together then stitch all the way around using a ¼” seam

Step 4:
On the felt side, unfold the binding and position it so the fold line sits on the stitch line on the felt, this will help the binding fold over the egde. Pin the binding on all the way around. Ensure to fold back ¼” at the start to ensure a clean finish on the front once it folds over. Stitch all the way around, folding the binding at the corners. once you reach the start, overlap the binding by ½”.

Step 5:
Turn the mat over, right side up and start to fold the binding over to the front and pin it down. There will be approx 6-7mm of binding showing on the front panel. stitch the binding down, stitching as close to the edge of the binding as possible. Ensure you fold the corners to give a clean corner. Once you are back to the start tuck under the excess binding and finish it off.

You now have a handy organizer right at your fingertips whilst sewing!
