  • 1- 8” square of cotton fabric for the basket bottom
  • 1- 8” square of cotton batting
  • Embroidery thread to compliment the fabrics
  • Two pieces of fibrous water soluble stabilizer to fit hoop
  • Large embroidery hoop to fit design
  • KK2000

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
The project is easy to do because all the stitching is done in the hoop. The design was enlarged at the machine with no stitching problems. Complimentary fabrics were used making the mini-basket reversible.

    Step 1:
Read through the instructions thoroughly before beginning and assemble all the materials needed to complete the project. Decide where this mini-basket will be used and choose two complimentary fabrics to fit the use. The basket made for the project will be used in the kitchen, so coffee-themed fabrics were used, along with black embroidery thread so the stitching would show.

    Step 2:
Load the design on the machine and increase the size (6.11” was the max the machine would do). Choose a hoop to accommodate the size of the design. Note: embroidery software may also be used to increase the size of the design.

    Step 3:
Press the fabrics well using spray starch to stiffen the fabrics and add a nice finish.

    Step 4:
Load a bobbin with the chosen embroidery thread. Hoop two layers of fibrous water soluble stabilizer in the hoop.

    Step 5:
Place the hoop on the machine and stitch Color 1: the placement line. Remove the hoop from the machine. Spray the back of the bottom fabric with KK2000 and place the fabric wrong side down over the placement line, smoothing in place. Turn the hoop over and lightly spray the front of the stabilizer with the spray adhesive.

    Step 6:
Place the cotton batting over the placement line. Spray the back of the top fabric with spray adhesive and place it down over the batting, right side up.

    Step 9:
Before the last color stitches, remove the hoop from the machine and carefully trim away the excess fabrics and batting.

    Step 10:
Place the hoop back on the machine and stitch the last color which is the satin edge finish.

    Step 11:
Remove the project form the hoop and trim away the excess stabilizer close to the satin stitching, but do be very careful not to accidentally cut any of the threads.

    Step 12:
Decide which will be the inside and outside of the basket when it is put together.

    Step 13:
If there is any stabilizer still visible around the edges, use a clean sponge or towel dipped in water to dab around the outer edges of the stitching to dissolve the remaining stabilizer. Let the piece dry.

    Step 14:
At each corner, bring the adjoining sides together and pin as shown.

    Step 15:
At the sewing machine, stitch the corner from the outside edge to the inner single stitching line. Do this on all the corners and then press along the single stitching line to help shape the basket on all sides.

    Step 16:
The fun thing about this basket is that it can be reversed. If you’d like, tack down the corner flaps or add a decorative button to hold them in place against the basket sides.

    Step 17:
Congratulations on complete the ITH Mini-Fabric Basket! This one will hold tea bags, stir sticks, and sweetener at the breakfast table.
