Your grandchildren will love helping make these mug mats for Mother’s Day, even if they are only old enough to push the start button on the machine. They are that simple to do.

Materials

5” x 7” embroidery hoop

1 9” X 7” rectangle of white Kona Cloth®

1 9” x 7” rectangle of print quilting cotton for back

1 9” x 7” rectangle of low loft batting

1 2 ¼” strip of matching print quilting cotton cut the width of the fabric

1 sheet of 2.5 ounce cut-away stabilizer

Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

Use print fabrics for the backs and bindings that define the Mother’s personality. Change the threads called for in the color charts to coordinate with those fabrics.

Step 1:

For each mug mat you will need the 9” x 7” front and back fabric as well as low loft batting. You will also need a 2 ¼” strip of matching fabric that is at least 36” long to bind the mug mat. Tautly hoop 2.5 ounce cut-away stabilizer in the hoop.

Step 2:

Run color stop (CS) 1 in white thread as a placement line for the fabrics.

Step 3:

Spray adhesive on the back of the front fabric. Align it over the placement line so that the fabric exceeds the placement line by ½” on all sides. Run CS 2 to tack down the fabric.

Step 4:

Follow the color chart for the next one or two color stops to embroider the lettering using thread colors that coordinate with your binding fabric.

Step 5:

After the lettering has stitched remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Lay the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray adhesive on the batting and align over the original placement lines so that the batting exceeds the placement lines by ½” on all sides. Spray adhesive on the back fabric and align over the batting.

Step 6:

Return the hoop to the machine and run the next to last CS to tack down the back fabric and batting to the project. Run the last CS to quilt the mug mat.

Step 7:

Remove the project from the hoop. Lay a clear see through ruler’s 1’4” mark along the placement lines and trim all sides to a ¼” seam allowance.

Step 8:

Step 9:

Congratulations your first Mom Mug Mat is complete!
