Turn an ordinary purchased fur stocking into a clever wine bag perfect to leave for Santa to fill or to take as a gift bag with a lovely bottle of wine when visiting friends.
Read through the instructions thoroughly before beginning and assemble all the materials needed to complete the project.

Step 2:
If desired, change the thread colors as was done for the project. Save the file as a new file to retain the thread colors.

Step 3:
Using a seam ripper, undo the stitching on the stocking from about 2” below the cuff on each side. Fold one side of the stocking in half lengthwise. The bottom of the stocking will be cut to remove the toe portion.

Step 4:
Use a ruler to square off the bottom, and then cut and use the heel portion as a guide to cut off the toe.

Step 5:
Open up the stocking that was just cut and lay it flat over the remaining side and cut that side the same shape as the first.

Step 6:
Measure across the middle of the stocking. Cut a piece of white fabric about 2” wider on each side. Make note of the height of the design. Cut the white fabric large enough to be hooped entirely and center of the fabric.

Step 7:
Hoop the fabric with stabilizer, centering it. Load the design on the machine.

Step 8:
Stitch the design following the chosen color sequence. If needed, slow down the machine when stitching metallic thread.

Step 9:
To aid in squaring up and trimming the fabric, place marks at the outer edges of the fabric using the marks on the hoop as a guide. So that the red stocking won’t show through the white fabric, the stabilizer will be left behind the entire fabric that was embroidered. Square up the fabric, measuring and cutting it 1” above

Step 11:
Measure the width of the white fabric and cut two pieces of piping that length. Cut bias strips of lame to cover each piece of piping.

Step 12:
Wrap the lame strip over the piping and baste the fabric close to the piping on each strip. Trim the excess fabric leaving about 3/8”.

Step 13:
Stitch the lame strips to the top and bottom of the embroidered piece, stitching as close to the piping as possible.

Step 14:
Turn the piping to the wrong side and press.

Step 15:
Position and pin the embroidered piece to one side of the stocking, centering it.. Using a piping or zipper foot, edge stitch the embroidered piece to the stocking using the white sewing thread.

Step 16:
The stocking will look like this. Now it is time to trim the sides of the embroidered piece.

Step 17:
Trim the ends of the embroidered piece. Now pin the front and back of the stocking bag together.

Step 18:
Use the red sewing thread to stitch the stocking together, beginning at where the stitching was pulled out 2” below the top, around the bottom and up the other side.

Step 19:
Create boxed corners at the bottom outside edges of the stocking. Turn the stocking right side out.

Form the boxed corners well and the roll down the top cuff.
