Materials
  • 9.5” x 14” hoop (or use a large hoop and hoop each tree separately)
  • Gold embroidery thread
  • 1- white Kona cotton fabric to fit hoop
  • 1- poly mesh stabilizer
  • 2- white nylon organza 17” x 12”
  • ½ yard green holiday theme fabric
  • Sewing thread to match green fabric
  • 1 pkg. Multi-Color motion lights from MyPunkBroidery
  • Polyester stuffing

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
This pillow was done by stitching three tree designs in one hooping. If you do not have a hoop that large, the project may still be done by individually hooping each tree and aligning them. Make any adjustments to the fabric and stabilizer quantities as needed. ¼” seams are used throughout.

    Step 1:
Read through the instructions thoroughly before beginning and assemble all the materials needed to complete the project. Select the 9.5” x 14” hoop size. Load the tree design, rotating it. Copy and paste two more times. Align the trees along the bottom and then space the trees so they just barely touch each other.

    Step 2:
Hoop one layer of polymesh stabilizer with the Kona cotton and stitch the design in one color.

    Step 3:
Carefully cut away the stabilizer from around the trees and then press the fabric well.

    Step 4:
Trim the fabric to size, allowing 2.5” all around the outer embroidered edges.

    Step 5:
The embroidered fabric will measure 15.5” long and 10” high. Cut two pieces of organza slightly larger than the embroidered fabric. The organza will be used to encase the motion lights so they don’t move around inside the pillow. Turn the embroidery so the back side faces up and then place down one layer of the organza.

    Step 6:
Take the lights out of the package. Read the instructions. You’ll note the arrows show the direction to place the lights for slow or fast motion. Though I tried to keep them all facing in one direction, in the end, that was not possible but that was ok because that way all the lights were different in their motion. Plan the placement of the lights over the trees.

    Step 7:
Place the second layer of organza over the lights. Place pins around each light to form a pocket to hold it. Do this for each light. Keep the organza pieces as smooth as possible.

    Step 8:
Now stitch the light “pockets” in the two layers of organza. Sew around each light to encase it. You may wish to do one tree at a time because it is easier to handle and the pins won’t slip out of the organza.

    Step 9:
Repeat the process of placement, pinning, and stitch the pockets for each tree.

    Step 10:
The organza allows the lights to shine through the embroidered trees. Call the kids! Watch their faces as they wave their hand over the embroidery and the lights are activated! Now it is time to border or frame the embroidery. Out of the green fabric, cut strips slightly longer than the sides of the pillow and 2.5” wide.

    Step 11:
Place the right sides together and stitch the strips to the sides of the pillow front.

    Step 12:
Measure and cut the strips for the top and bottom and sew those on. Measure the width and length of the pillow top and cut a piece of backing fabric. With right sides together, stitch the back to the pillow top around all edges.

    Step 13:
To turn and stuff the pillow, pinch the pillow back fabric and then cut a slit on the bias.

    Step 14:
Turn the fabric right side out through the opening, forming the corners well.

    Step 15:
Press the edges and then edge stitch along the inner edge of the border pieces through all layers. Lightly stuff the pillow through the opening.

    Step 16:
Use a ladder stitch to close up the opening.

    Step 17:
Congratulations on completing a beautiful pillow that will light up to the surprise of family and guests, when they walk by it.
